SEEING IS BEE-LIEVING!

Take a Look at How Busy TBB's Been This Spring:

Bethel Pilot Program Complete:

Benches for Generations

🚌 Remember when we sang "SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER" every June?  Right before students headed out on break, TBB took our programs to the youth at Bethel High.  The students made FOUR benches for their current and future peers; check them out!  Stay tuned for round two of this new program; we'll return in the fall.

Popping Up Around Pierce County:

TBB is Out in the Community

TBB had a good problem in June: Running out of supplies at our Community Pop-Up Events!  All of our make-and-take events were so popular; we ran out of supplies.  Take a look at some of our projects:
⛵️ TBB staff and volunteers worked with youth to make over seventy-five toy boats in early June!  Nothing starts the summer off like crafty boats in Old Town Tacoma's Job Carr Museum.
🐙 At this year's Ocean Fest, TBB provided a space to decorate hundreds of beautifully cut-out marine creatures and learn about them too! Did you know that the Giant Red Pacific Octopus, the Enteroctopus Dofleini, has square pupils that allow them to see in all directions? Neato!
✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 It was a full house at Stewart Heights for this year's first Juneteenth WA celebration!  TBB provided yet another crafts table filled with popsicle stick flags, wooden frames, linocut prints, cut-out fists, beads, and keychains galore!  Both adults and youth alike had a blast!
🛹 It's time to put your finger flips to the test!  At this year's Go Skate Tacoma's Block Party, TBB helped folks build miniature ramps for fingerboards.  And what's a ramp without a little bit of graffiti art?  Take a quick look at some rad ramps!

📢 UPCOMING EVENTS

🕔 Summer Hours are here!  Now that school is out, TBB is operating on our summer hours, meaning most programs will run during the afternoon, and we'll be closed most days by 5 PM.  We want everyone, including TBB's hardworking staff, to enjoy the PNW's long days of sun!
🫶 Sharp Sisters is back for its fifth season this August!
This year's week-long day camp for young women and gender-expansive youth is packed with community building and creative expression through art, craftsmanship, reflection, and water exploration.  Activities in partnership with Sea Potential, Communities for a Healthy Bay, and the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum!  TBB has FIVE slots available for youth referred from Community Organizations; email us for more information!

Organizational Spotlight:
TBB Gets Honored!

Executive Director Shannon Shea with Landmarks Preservation Commission Chair Kevin Bartoy

🎖️ As many of you know, Tacoma is rich with culture, history, and resources, and many residents are dedicated to preserving the legacy we share.  The City of Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission honored TBB with the 2023 Outstanding Achievement Award in Historic Preservation, specifically for Broadening Perspectives in Preservation!  This award recognizes the critical work of community members to enhance and preserve Tacoma's unique character.

Staff Spotlight:

Meet Captain George Kurzman!

👋 Meet George! George is originally from Washington, DC, but he has lived in Olympia for three decades. George comes to TBB with skills in boatbuilding, boating operations, and working with youth across many types of programming, and he is a licensed captain. He's an all-around asset to TBB as we build out our on-the-water capacity. George has worked on various boats, from small dinghies to the Lady Washington. George was even a part of the original crew that helped build Patience and Spirit, talk about having a longtime connection with our fleet and our mission! George's other interests include vintage sewing machines, art, and food. Thank you, George!

Mark Your Calendars:
