June 2023

In recognition of Juneteenth

Staff members at Emory Libraries have been looking forward to Juneteenth. We’ve selected books, streaming videos, and events, and written personal reflections about what it means to remember this day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the U.S. were notified, 18 months later, that the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued and they were free.

Below you’ll find links where you can:

Dive into our new Juneteenth resource guide, compiled by our librarians, that lists books, podcasts and oral histories, video and audio recordings, articles, community events, and even resources for kids.
Learn how MacMillan Law Library outreach librarian Sarah Rodgers grew into her appreciation for the significance of this day.
Read the blog by Rose Library Director Jennifer Gunter King about civil rights leader Rev. C.T. Vivian, his role in the movement, his continued service in lifting up young Blacks, and the release of the movie about his life.

Happy Juneteenth!

Celebrating Pride Month

June is Pride Month, and we’re celebrating with a Pride button-making event for the Emory community on Thursday, June 22, from noon–1:30 p.m. in the entrance lobby of the Woodruff Library and all day at Oxford College Library.

We’re also shining a spotlight on the LGBTQ collections at the Rose Library, which document the struggles and successes of the LGBTQ+ community in Atlanta and the South. Check out this blog by Rose Library outreach archivist Gaby Hale, which highlights four collections, including one from an Emory alumnus.

And learn more about Emory Libraries’ efforts to incorporate Homosaurus vocabulary in the library catalog. The Homosaurus is an international linked data vocabulary of LGBTQ+ terms that will make our resources more up-to-date, representative, and easier to find.

Summer reading recommendations

Whether you’re getting ready to travel for summer vacation, or looking forward to a staycation, our Emory librarians have some recommendations for books and e-books, streaming shows and movies, and music to enjoy. They’ve even created an international fiction guide with several recommendations and an introduction to notable authors in various countries.
