We need your help again...

We didn't expect it, but the Tokai Cecilia Management Plan we asked you to support our inputs to in May 2022 has gone through another round of revision in what is now becoming a protracted process. Nevertheless it is still critical to give input, and therefore we ask for your help again. This will take you less than 1 minute.

Feedback on the revised draft Tokai Cecilia Implementation Plan (TCIP) is due today, Monday 19 June 2023. If you haven't yet submitted your inputs, please click the button below to support our conservation-friendly submission to SANParks. You are welcome to either endorse our full response, or to select parts of it to submit yourself. Read our full response here

An appeal from our Chair, Prof Tony Rebelo:
"Please, do not just ignore this: we do not want to lose Tokai Park in the short term to ill-conceived plans for shade and recreation, or in the long term (because this will happen) to some development.  It is vital that as much is conserved as possible, and that it all stays within the National Park, where it is safest from developers.

Tokai Park is one of the last places on earth where we can help stem the large number of extinctions underway in Cape Town - there is no point in worrying about the Amazon, or the High Seas or Global Warming while ignoring the crisis in our own back yard. Cape Town has the second highest number of plant species threatened with extinction (after Hawaii). We need your help - Now!

A summary of the TCMF Process to date
You might be wondering where we are in this TCMF business, and what the "TCIP" is. Most of us have lost track since it has dragged out for over 2 years. If you would like a recap, this summary is for you:

The TCMF (Tokai Cecilia Management Framework) has now had 4 phases. It was initially intended to have 3 and take less than a year (please see the figure below, with the original timeframes as presented to the public in May 2021).

The TCMF process included facilitated engagement and a commenting period (1st phase) and focused workshops and consolidation (2nd phase). The final (3rd) phase involved SANParks drafting the
revised framework based on approximately 1500 hours of work done by the working groups, and allowed for one round of inputs before being finalized. The public could submit comments until 31 May 2022, which was later than the previously anticipated November 2021. The 4th phase has resulted in SANParks producing the Revised Draft TCIP (Tokai Cecilia Implementation Plan) based on stakeholder inputs. This is what is currently out for comment, with the deadline of 19 June 2023.

The next step is apparently the development of a detailed programme of work for each outcome goal, the implementation of which is expected to take place over the next 5 years. Please see the last page of the revised draft TCIP for more details and timeframes.
