National History Day in North Dakota Project Showcased at Smithsonian Museum

BISMARCK, N.D. – A group of students from Davies High School in Fargo were among the National History Day contestants whose projects were featured in a June 14 showcase at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Leighton Koepplin, Alaina Nordhougen, and Sophia Pfeifer’s project, “Roe V Wade: The Birth of Women's Bodily Autonomy,” was one of 48 selected for display at the museum. Their teacher is Zach Hochhalter.

Nineteen North Dakota students competed in the National History Day contest at the University of Maryland, College Park, June 11-15. North Dakota’s junior outstanding affiliate entry was awarded to Taylor Gerbig, Tolga Kilic, and Olivia Weller of Dickinson Middle School for their project, “Frontiers in Paralympics.” Their teacher is Alyssa Wagner. The senior outstanding affiliate entry was awarded to Angelina Kappen of Fargo North High School for “The Arab Revolt of 1916.” Her teacher is Melissa Evensen. Outstanding affiliate entry distinctions are given to one junior and senior project from each state.

While on the East Coast, North Dakota students presented their work on the theme "Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas" and had opportunities to meet the more than 2,600 other competitors. They also visited the U.S. Capitol and met with members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation.

The National History Day in North Dakota contest is open to all students grades 6-12 and hosted each spring by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Top entries from this competition are eligible for the national contest.
