Suicide Prevention Update

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators assist in the delivery of the Mental Health Commissions’ Suicide Prevention 2025 Framework. Our role is to build community capacity to prevent and respond to suicide through awareness, education & training, partnerships and events. We work with community groups, organisations and interagency networks to build safety and support.

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators do not provide a crisis services or interventions for consumers.

What's been happening

RightByYou (RBY)
 
It has been 2 months since the official launch of the RBY website, and SPC has been working with The Wonder Co. and Neami’s Comms on its social media engagements. This has included the creation of a RBY Instagram filter, several posts and two reels.
 
Since the launch, there have been 5,508 users of the website with 6,865 clicks on the website. The majority (n=2,701) of new users came from the direct link, while the second highest (25%) came from Snapchat.

YACWA Conference Presentation - 9 June
 
SPC’s Neeka and Amy presented at the YACWA fair.ground. Conference 2023 on “Right By You: Empowering Young People To End Youth Suicide”. The presentation explored some of the barriers faced by young people today in accessing suicide prevention support as well as the complexities in remaining current to young people in an ever-changing online landscape.  
 
Wellbeing in the Workplace Forum - 21 June
 
This forum took place at John McGrath Pavilion on the traditional land of the Whadjuk Noongar people. The purpose of this forum was to support Neami SPC and Community Engagement community partners in prompting workplace wellbeing by introducing them to a range of information and resources provided by a variety of services. Over 40 attendees heard from presenters including Thrive at Work, Suicide Aware, Men’s Talk and Wesley Lifeforce
Uluru Statement Dinner - 10 May
 
Through SPC’s relationship with Indigenous Support Program:Dandjoo Darbalung
SPC was invited to join their Uluru Statement Dinner, to hear from key Aboriginal leaders around the upcoming referendum.

SPC South Update

YAMHFA
Youth Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid was delivered in the Peel Region for Bindjareb Moorditj Noongar Moort and Services. Attendees learnt valuable mental health first aid skills, as well as spend time learning from local Elders and the local community.
 
 
PaRK Suicide Prevention Collaborative
Amy, as Neami South Metro SPC, will be the new Chair of the PaRK Suicide Prevention Collaborative, working alongside Lived Experience Lead, Roses in the Ocean. Amy is very excited to work with local services and community in this next chapter on the PaRK Group.
 
Rainbow Community Fair
We supported Pride in Peel’s Rainbow Community Fair in May. Neami, Standby, Roses in the Ocean and Anglicare collaborated for the event, holding a mental health resource stall.
 

Culture Through Sport Program
Neami National partner with Imagined Futures and other services to support the inaugural Aboriginal Cultural Games inter-school carnival that brought together 180 students from six different primary schools to learn about and celebrate our First Nations culture. This carnival was run by The Stephen Michael Foundation who deliver their Culture Through Sport program to celebrate NAIDOC week.
 
SPC East Update

UWA Guild Student Living Forum - 4 May
SPC held a stall at the UWA Guild Student Living Forum and shared resources on accessing suicide prevention and postvention support. The forum was a student-living information session with the aim to increase awareness about the different resources that are available to help them with the challenges that come with being independent and facing mental and financial hardship as a university student and away from home.
 

 
MHFA Ngala - 5 & 12 May update
Mental Health First Aid training was provided for free to all Community Partner service organisations in the City of Swan. Each partner organisation was offered 3 places at the training for staff and volunteers delivering front-line community programs. The training was delivered centrally in the Caversham Community Centre. Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon Tea as well as tea, coffee and water were provided to all participants and the Facilitator on both days. Ellenbrook CaLD community group The Sister Project provided the catering.
 

 
Armadale – ATSI Youth Horse-riding - 6 May
SPC in collaboration with headspace Cannington and Derbal Yerrigan Community Liaison Officer program, co-funded a horse-riding session for 10 Aboriginal youth from the ages of 12-17.  The first 10 spots were snatch-up and the 10 young ones were all ready and excited to be picked up on the day. After the horse-riding session, the kids had a chance to talk to the community services with an aim to increase service awareness and destigmatise mental health services. Due to the success of engagement for this activity, we will be aiming to run more sessions this year.



East Metro Standby Workshop - 15 June
In an aim to engage organisations and local services in the Cannington and Armadale area to participate in a more collaborative approach to suicide prevention and postvention, Standby ran a Pathways to Care workshop at Canning River Eco Education Centre. For those interested in being part of future planning for a South-East Suicide Prevention Network, please contact Neeka.zand@neaminational.org.au.
SPC North Update

Events
In the North metro region there has been a lot of planning of future events including NAIDOC in Merriwa, Homelessness Week in August as well as some school holiday activities. SPC also attended some workshops with Communities For Children and Standby.
 
Training and Workshops
Derbal Yerrigan delivered some mental health training in Mirrabooka for community. The training was attended by 17 people and was very well received. Standby also ran a workshop in partnership with Mercycare focusing on supports in postvention in the area.
