WMO elected Prof. Celeste Saulo as Secretary General and Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous as President in June 2023, during the 19th session of the World Meteorological Congress (Cg-19). During the event, the new GAW Science and Implementation Plan (2024-2027) got approved.

Prof. Gregory Carmichael (University of Iowa, US) renewed his appointment as chair of the Environmental Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry Scientific Steering Committee (EPAC SSC) up to 2027. The Research Board and its EPAC SSC oversee the implementation of the GAW Programme including the recent approved WMO initiative, the Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W).

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed the 12th of July as the International Day of Combating Sand and Dust Storms, recognizing that sand and dust storms, along with their negative impacts at different scales, are issues of international concern, high latitudes included. The SDS-WAS Regional Nodes and its associated centers contributed to this special day.

ARCH Working Group meeting

The recenty approved GAW AiR Pollution-Climate Change-Health Effects Nexus Working Group (ARCH WG) has been established to expand societal services related to human health. The first hybrid meeting was held on November 5-6, 2023 at Peking University, China.

GAW meetings in EUMETSAT

The SAG Modelling Applications and the SDS-WAS had their annual meetings on November, 6-7, as a side event of the 13th International Cooperation Aerosol Prediction (ICAP) workshop hosted by EUMETSAT. Aerosol experts from monitoring and modelling communities joined forces to better promote forecasting services.

AC Measurement Quality meeting

The Expert Team on Atmospheric Composition Measurement Quality met in the GAW Izaña Observatory on November, 6-8. This Expert Team is ensuring that the GAW data is consistent, of known and adequate quality, supported by comprehensive metadata.

GAFIS annual hybrid meeting

On November, 16-17; the GAFIS Steering Committee met at WMO for discussing the new activites to be promoted in 2024. These activities includes model intecomparisons, technical publications for low-cost sensor applications, capacity-building events and data policy actions.

GURME annual hybrid meeting

On November, 23-24; GURME Steering Committee met at WMO to welcome new members and to define its 2024 roadmap. The main goals of this GAW expert group are the design of urban services, and the enhancement of our understanding of urban scale processes that are connected with climate.

EGU2023

The EGU23 hybrid General Assembly was held in Vienna, Austria on April, 23–28. It was a great success with 16,357 presentations given in 938 sessions. There were sessions convened by our GAW experts but also side events presenting the GAW SIP 2024-2027. The abstract submission for the EGU2024 is open until 10th January 2024, check the sessions promoted by our GAW experts!

EMS2023

The European Meteorological Society (EMS) conference was held in Bratislava on September, 3-8. The EMS2023 was attended by 633 participants from 43 countries. The GAW GURME convened a session on urban process and had a side event for discussing new activities.

CWCC2023

The first International Conference on Chemical Weather and Chemical Climate (CWCC) was held in Shanghai from October 16-20. The WMO was in the organisation of the event and GAW experts held several talks.

GAWTEC 41

GAWTEC provides scientific guidance and instructions to GAW station personnel from worldwide global and regional stations. The 41st training session was held on October 16-27th, and focused on aerosols.

Training School on calibration

Izaña GAW Observatory hosted a training school on calibration of photometers and Brewers. The event, organised by the SDS-WAS Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe Node, was held from October 30th to November 3rd, with  trainees from Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

GAW at COP28

A top-level delegation from WMO will attend COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 30th to December 12th. At COP28, GAW will contribute to different side events for the following priority areas: 

• Global Greenhouse Gas Watch

• Early Warnings for All by 2027; in which natural hazards as wildfires and sand and dust storms are considered.

Paris 2024 Olympics

This WMO WWRP and GURME joint Research Demonstration Project will be holding its General Assembly on  December 12-14th in Paris.

AGU’s Fall Meeting

Scientists, educators, policymakers, journalists and communicators will attend this international event in San Francisco, USA, on December 11-15th to better understand our planet and environment.
