Challenges

Corporates Hesitate, Delayed Purchase Decisions

A common challenge we hear from members during intake interviews is that prospective corporate customers evaluating MRV product offerings are delaying their purchase decisions. With the SBTN just released and TNFD in draft, our members believe prospective customers may be taking a wait and see approach. Biodiversity and nature protection are urgent. We are committed to understanding the roots of such hesitations and encouraging private sector action.

Biodiversity Credit Failures — Opportunities for MRV Providers to Partner with Local Communities

First class reporting by Lisa Song, published in Pro Republica, takes a critical look at the challenges of biodiversity offsets at the hand of IFC sponsored projects that have resulted in disheartening failures in Northwest Guinea, Africa. The failures affect local communities, biodiversity, nature conservation, chimpanzee populations with serious potential consequences including spillover and pandemics.

The MRV sector has an opportunity help by providing advanced technologies while committing to environmental and social justice through the democratization of knowledge. When people have direct access to powerful tools and information about the challenges their communities are facing, they are able to strengthen their influence and amplify their voice around decision-making in the places they live.

It is critical that developing nations have access to emerging technology and that local communities are included as part of the solution with fair revenue sharing throughout the value chain.
