What to do during your Clarity Break

Dear Reader

Clarity breaks are designed to get you out of the office, into a neutral space where you can be undisturbed and where you can work on the business and not in the business.

It's psychological to remove yourself from the regular place of work to be in a neutral space where your brain can be open.  But then, once you're there, what can you actually do during this 30 minutes or 60, or 90 minutes that you've set aside to work on the business?

I always suggest to my clients, take a clean sheet of paper or a notebook and a pen so you have that to capture your thoughts on. Or, if you're someone who likes to scribble on a pad, take your pad, or take your laptop if you're a person who loves typing the information in there. Just have something there with a clean sheet with nothing on it.

The first thing I tell them then is, think about the business as a factory floor, and you're able to lift yourself above the business and you're looking down on the business.  You're kind of on a balcony looking down at the business.

And then picture in your mind's eye, what do you do every day? You? What does your team do?  What is the path that a client follows through your business? How do you produce whatever you're producing? What is that system?

Just thinking about the business and think, does it make sense? Are there perhaps areas that you can simplify?  That's the first biggest tool we can use: think of everything and wherever something feels like this is an area that's complicated, lots of steps, lots of places where things can go wrong -
think of how you can simplify, smooth that system, or that part of the system, so that is a simpler way of doing it.

By lifting yourself up on the business and just using this for the first time, start scribbling down notes and ideas.  It may be the roles of people, it may be the equipment you're using, it may be how you do certain things, but start scribbling and start putting those notes together.

Very soon you'll start building more and more ideas and more thoughts during your clarity break. So when you are done with a clarity break, you will be more clear about the business, that's why we call it a clarity break. The fact that you are thinking on the business and you're not just stuck into the everyday problems, you'll return to the business with more confidence, with more focus, because you'll have a clear direction.

There you have it, I hope this is helpful.
