Greetings friends

Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, technical difficulties occur, and this was a week of technical difficulties, which affected the recording and release of this week’s show. It happens, and when available, it will be posted to the channel.

In the meantime, I hope you will be satisfied with my commentaries on this week’s reading.

It is amazing how we are almost halfway through 2023 – tempus fugit – and last week, we talked about time being the only true neglected commodity – do not waste it; do not fear it.  Live it to its fullest; you will be asked one day and cherish your time with friends and family.

Time with loved ones is not an obligation.  It is a privilege and a gift.  I know so many who have such poor relationships with their parents, their children, their siblings – those who are our genetic connections through the eons of time.

This week we will be reading about the relationship between Moses and his brother Aaron and sister Miriam.

And we continue our theme of family as next week is Father’s Day and the change in season that ushers in summer, the longest day of the year, and the connection between loss and gain, and next week we will talk about all that.

But for this week, we read about the final setup for the journey and an incident that holds it up – one that tells us about the concept of returning and not leaving anyone behind.

We find out more about the role of the Levites and that, in effect, G0d had made a trade on the night of the 10th plague.  He traded the first born of Israel and Egypt and exchanged the Levites for the exchange of the first born of Israel, and their job is to serve Aaron and care for the tabernacle and its parts.

The journey is now ready to begin officially.  The people are 11 days away from the Promised Land, but this is not just a physical journey but the journey of the soul - we get insight into what some would consider the nature of man - Numbers 11:1 11 – “And the people were like grumblers.”
This is just the first of many accounts of their complaining in Numbers, and, interestingly, it is the only one in which the reason for their dissatisfaction is not told.

Is man a grumbler or a happy being - what are you - I know too often we can be both, but which do we vibrate to?

And the reading ends with the story of Aaron and Miriam speaking out against Moses’ Cushite wife.  This is wife number 2, that we know about, for Moses.

It is the warning about saying bad things about people; about gossip; about the terrible crime of having an “evil tongue,” and Miriam is punished for it, and many feel that is not fair – what about Aaron?

But the people will not begin the journey until Miriam is returned to the collective because we care for each other.

We always have, and we always will.
