Monkeypox Cases in Arizona

New Case of Mpox In Arizona with Expected Increase in Cases in the Summer

The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) has received a report of a new infection of mpox (formerly monkeypox) in Arizona diagnosed in Maricopa County. This comes at a time when other jurisdictions around the country are seeing new clusters of mpox and the
CDC is warning of the possibility of another increase in cases during the summer. MCDPH is encouraging everyone at risk for mpox to get vaccinated, including completing the two (2) dose vaccine.

Medical providers are strongly encouraged to begin or continue mpox screening and mpox vaccinations.

These screenings and vaccinations are of particular importance to populations at higher risk for acquiring mpox including gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, and transgender or nonbinary people and persons with HIV regardless of vaccination or travel history. While there are populations at greater risk for acquiring mpox anyone can get and spread mpox.

If a patient asks to be vaccinated against mpox, that should be to receive the vaccine; extensive risk assessments are unnecessary.

Mpox vaccinations are an important and effective intervention to prevent mpox. However, transmission is still possible among persons who are vaccinated. People who are vaccinated should continue to avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with someone who has mpox because infection may occur in fully vaccinated persons.

Other jurisdictions are reporting milder disease in individuals who have been fully vaccinated.

The mpox vaccine, JYNNEOS, is a two (2) dose vaccine approved for the prevention of smallpox and mpox. Persons need to get both doses of the vaccine for the best protection against mpox. The second dose should be given four (4) weeks after the first dose. If more than 35 days has elapsed since the first dose was given, administer the second dose as soon as possible. Vaccine boosters and postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) are not recommended at this time in fully vaccinated persons.

Mpox vaccine is available without charge. Medical providers should contact their local county health department to refer patients for vaccination or to obtain vaccines for patients they treat.
