EBCC Newsletter

Special issue

Dear readers,

The scientific community is deeply concerned about the ongoing EU Green Deal discussions. The key proposed legislation has been under vicious attack with outright populistic claims. Therefore, scientists initiated a letter supporting the EU’s Green Deal and rejecting the unjustified arguments against Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR) and the Nature Restoration Law (NRL).They urge policymakers to continue the legislative procedure for the SUR and the NRL and invite opponents of the Green Deal for consultations.

EBCC gathers data on bird population changes and distribution across Europe in the long term. We regularly present the declines in many common bird species and participate in studies surveying the causes of such extensive biodiversity drop. Many studies have shown that the most critical reason why the bird populations decrease is human activity, including intensive agriculture using pesticides and fertilisers, forest management, urbanisation, climate change and land abandonment.

One of the EBCC´s aims is to ensure the use of the information in evidence-based decision-making and conservation. Therefore, EBCC supports the NRL and goes along with the statement of hundreds of world scientists presented in the letter.
