Call for Evidence by Health Scrutiny Select Committee Pharmacy Inquiry: Deadline to respond 6th July 2023

You may have seen in the Community Pharmacy England (CPE) newsletter that the government has launched a call for evidence on the future of pharmacy.  Community Pharmacy Lincolnshire will be submitting a response to the call for evidence, as will CPE, however, anyone with answers to the questions shown below under terms of reference is welcome to submit a response to the inquiry directly. Contractors may wish to submit a response to reflect their views for consideration by the Health Scrutiny Select Committee. It should be noted response/evidence submitted is usually available to the public.

Further details and a link to the relevant pages are shown in the green box below.

Pharmacy Inquiry

The pharmacy inquiry will explore issues impacting different types of pharmacy, with a particular focus on community, primary care and hospital pharmacy services.

During a time of change and reorganisation across the health and care system, and following upheaval driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, the inquiry will assess the current status of pharmacy in England and consider what the future of pharmacy could look like. The inquiry will focus on addressing current challenges, particularly around the funding model, digital infrastructure and workforce recruitment, training and retention. Looking to the future, the inquiry will consider what innovations could have the biggest impact and what action needs to be taken now to ensure the potential of pharmacy is realised.

The Committee’s Independent Expert Panel is also carrying out a separate evaluation of Government commitments in the area of pharmacy.

The committee wants to hear your views. We welcome submissions from anyone with answers to the questions in the call for evidence Terms of Reference below. You can submit evidence until Thursday 6 July 2023.

Terms of Reference:

  • What does the future of pharmacy look like and how can the Government ensure this is realised?
  • What are the challenges in pharmacy workforce recruitment, training and retention, and how might these best be addressed?
  • To what extent are digital systems used in pharmacy sufficiently interoperable with those in general practice and hospitals?
  • What innovations could have the biggest impact on pharmacy services and why?
  • To what extent are funding arrangements for community pharmacy fit for purpose?
  • What factors cause medicine shortages and how might these be addressed in future?
  • To what extent does community pharmacy have the resource and capacity to realise the ambitions in DHSC's Primary Care Recovery Plan?
  • Are there the right number of community pharmacies in the right places, and how can we ensure that is the case across the country?
  • To what extent are commissioning arrangements for community pharmacy fit for purpose?
