Helen Keller -

Her Life as an Activist

A new book by journalist and filmmaker Max Wallace, After the Miracle: The Political Crusades of Helen Keller, focuses on the lifelong activism of Helen Keller (1880 - 1968) who was much more than just the "inspirational story" portrayed in The Miracle Worker. A Radcliffe College graduate, she was a prolific writer of books, essays, poetry and speeches, and a co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union. Keller worked for rights for the disabled and spoke out against Jim Crow segregation and apartheid in South Africa. She advocated for peace in both world wars, the right to vote for women, and access to birth control.

As this issue's theme is poetry, here is an excerpt from her poem "A Chant of Darkness", published in Century Magazine in 1908.

My hands evoke sight and sound out of feeling,
Intershifting the senses endlessly,
Linking motion with sight, odor with sound.
They give color to the honeyed breeze,
The measure and passion of a symphony
To the beat and quiver of unseen wings.
In the secrets of earth and sun and air
My fingers are wise;
They snatch light out of darkness,
They thrill to harmonies breathed in silence.

I walk in the stillness of the night,
And my soul uttereth her gladness.
O Night, still, odorous Night, I love thee!
O wide, spacious Night, I love thee!
O steadfast, glorious Night!
I touch thee with my hands;
I lean against thy strength;
I am comforted.

O fathomless, soothing Night!
Thou art a balm to my restless spirit,
I nestle gratefully in thy bosom,
Dark, gracious mother! Like a dove,
I rest in thy bosom.
Out of the uncharted, unthinkable dark we came,
And in a little time we shall return again
Into the vast, unanswering dark.

Image for National Indigenous History Month #NIHM2023 on a white background. The image features the earth in pink and yellow, overlaid with mist changing colour from left to right from green to blue to purple to pink to red to yellow. Flying from the earth is an eagle in yellow representing First Nations, in the blue mist a blue narwhal representing Inuit, and the neck of a violin in pink and teal behind the earth, representing the Metis.
This June, deepen your understanding by immersing yourself in stories from First Nations, Inuit and Métis voices.
Cover for the book "On the Trapline" featuring a grandfather in black cap and pants, dark blue hooded jacket and carrying a walking stick, with his hands on the shoulders of his young grandson, with dark hair, white jacket and black pants. They are standing in grass on a lakeshore, looking out over the water to the other shore with trees in the distance. The author and illustrator's names are in the bottom corner of the cover, David A. Robertson and Julie Flett. Two gold seals are above the names, TD Children's Literature Award Winner and GG Books Winner, Canada Council for the Arts Governor General's Literary Awards.
Read a book to a child.
A boy and Moshom, his grandpa, take a trip together to visit a place of great meaning to Moshom. A trapline is where people hunt and live off the land, and it was where Moshom grew up. As they embark on their northern journey, the child repeatedly asks his grandfather, "Is this your trapline?" ...  This story...perfectly captures the experience of a young child's wonder as he is introduced to places and stories that hold meaning for his family.

Watch a film.
To Wake Up the Nakota Language, a 2017 film by Louise BigEagle (6 minutes), features 69-year old Armand McArthur. He is the last fluent Nakota speaker in the Pheasant Rump First Nation in southern Saskatchewan, and is working hard to keep the Nakota language alive for his community and future generations.
A First Nations man wearing a purple jacket, with long grey hair is featured in profile, looking left, against the background of a cloud filled sky. His hands are just visible in the bottom of the photograph, clasped in front of his chest. The film's title "TO WAKE UP THE NAKOTA LANGUAGE" is in the Nakota language to his left, above a black line, and in English in black capital letters under that.
The National Film Board of Canada has a wonderful online collection of Indigenous-made films, from shorts to full-length features (1968 - 2021). Take a look at them here.
