Courtenay Place cleanup - Monday 19 June 2023
- info from WCC:

Runsheet : Monday 19 June 2023,
9.00am-1.00pm (rain or shine!)

Over one day and working with businesses, Wellington City Council (WCC) is coordinating a community clean-up for Courtenay Place. With a concentrated effort we want to make a visible improvement in the short term and have identified a range of ways to freshen up Courtenay Place. On the day, we’ll see a range of cleaning and graffiti removal happening at hotspots. Businesses will also be out freshening up their spaces. Following this day, empty shops will be activated with artwork, and rubbish bin repairs made over the next month.

WCC’s cleaning and graffiti contractors will be leading the public space mahi, but we’d love to invite volunteers to join us! DCM will be leading waiata first thing, followed by two community litter clean up shifts, and then a post clean up coffee at Te Pokapū Hapori.

ICW working with the Pōneke Promise team

2022-23 Update

During 2022 and 2023 changes to Covid-19 restrictions enabled us to meet more regularly again with the Pōneke Promise team and separately with the City Safety team.

In 2023, these have become a combined meeting, and we meet every 4 to 6 weeks.

In preparation for two of our recent meetings we ran two surveys with local residents to gauge how they were feeling about the inner-city. That enabled us to directly raise questions and concerns relating to matters such as:

  • the look and feel of Courtenay Place
    for example: issues such as graffiti, general litter, grubby pavements, broken rubbish bins;

  • inner-city safety

    for example: issues such as dark areas, closed neglected shops fronts, rough sleepers, local thefts and incidents;

  • the continuing impact of the closed Reading Centre

    for example: wanting progress information about the closed Reading Centre and its car park. Residents shared that the Centre was once a family-friendly space which also offered a no-alcohol, under-cover space enjoyed by school students and families with children. The recent closure of McDonalds in the Centre has added to the sense of decline and lack of care about a once vibrant Courtenay Place.

We believe the contribution of your feedback - which we summarised and graphed anonymously
 so that we could share it - has helped to inform some recent Council team activities. However we know much more needs to be done and we will continue to make these meetings, and providing your feedback, a priority.

Recent Pōneke Promise information

The Pōneke Promise team delivered a two-year review report to Councillors on Tuesday 30 May.

And, here are some recent documents provided by the Pōneke Promise team.

Your feedback
We are keen to hear your latest thoughts about the inner-city - the good and perhaps not so good too - so that we can bring your feedback to the meetings. (They will remain anonymous.)

For example, what are your thoughts about the recent improvement to the Te Aro Park area with its wider pavements and the removal of the toilet block - what difference if any has it made for you?

And what do you think about the look and feel of the inner-city - for example Courtenay Place, Manners Street, Cuba Street etc - and what suggestions do you have that the Council's teams and/or the community could consider?
or you can email us if you prefer.

And, also, please do let us know what sorts of news and information interests you so we can include it in our updates.

Best wishes from
THE ICW COMMITTEE
