Teacher Workshop To Explore Cattle Industry During Great Dakota Boom

BISMARCK, N.D. – The State Historical Society of North Dakota is offering a free teacher workshop, “Barons, Bulls, Boom, and Bust,” Aug. 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Interpretive Center of the Chateau de Morès State Historic Site near Medora. Participants will also visit Chimney Park, the Chateau de Morès, and the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame.

“Barons, Bulls, Boom, and Bust” will focus on the cattle industry during the Great Dakota Boom that drew people such as the Marquis de Morès and his wife, Medora, to western North Dakota. Attendees will learn from experts about the cattle boom, lives of the De Morès family, cowboys and ranchers, economics of the time, the land, and promises made to attract people to the area. This workshop will equip educators to deliver North Dakota Studies curriculum and introduce them to learning opportunities at state historic sites and museums. Teachers of all grade levels will walk away with content and lessons for the upcoming school year. Graduate credit is available for a fee through Minot State University.

Registration for the workshop is required by Aug. 7 and can be accessed at bit.ly/barons-bulls-boom-bust. Space is limited. For more information, contact Education and Engagement Manager Laura Forde at 701.328.2792 or ljforde@nd.gov
