SHYC Opening Day is this Saturday June 17th!

Dear SHYC Members,
Opening Weekend is here!  Below you will find all the details you need to kick off a wonderful summer at SHYC. If you have any questions, please reach out anytime.

Opening Day Weekend Schedule - June 17th & 18th
Opening Day Weekend at SHYC is a special weekend full of events and traditions.  I hope to see everyone at these events and activities!!  Here is the schedule of events.

  • 2023 Opening Ceremony & Coffee - Saturday June 17th at 10AM - RAIN OR SHINE!  Please join us for the official opening of the club for the season and the hoisting of the flags. All club staff and officers will be introduced, along with our opening day remarks and ceremony. 
    • All members welcome at 10AM - come for coffee, bagels and donuts - and meet the new members, catch up with longtime members friends, sign-up to volunteer, and get excited for summer 2023. 
    • The officiating and Ceremony starts between 10:30-10:45am.  All members are invited to attend this wonderful, traditional ceremony - family friendly event with a casual dress code.
    • Weather/Rain - This event is held rain or shine and may be moved into the ballroom.  Pack a raincoat just in case! 
  • New Member Breakfast & Orientation - Saturday June 17th at 9AM.  All new members (and their sponsors/proposers) from 2022 and 2023 are invited to the club for complimentary coffee, bagels, and breakfast treats.  Come meet the Executive Committee, Committee Heads, ask questions and take a tour!  New members will be presented with a SHYC Burgee.  Families Welcome. 
  • Afternoon Opening Day Racing. Sonars and "PHRF Race #1" at 1pm.  Check the Sailing Instructions for more information, and exact times and details. 
  • Daily Launch Service - 8AM to Sunset. Starting Opening Day, launch service is offered daily from 8:00am to sunset. You can get the launch from the club house. If you need to call the launch, you can hail them on VHF Channel 72.  
  • SHYC Galley is Open Daily (11AM to 4PM) starting June 17th.  From Opening Day to Labor Day, the SHYC Galley is open seven days a week from 11:00am to 4:00pm.  Use your SHYC Member # (or your last name) at the outside Galley window to order. View the Galley Menu, plus weekend specials!  
  • Opening Day Cocktail Party – Saturday June 17th (6PM). Join us to celebrate the start of our season.  Passed appetizers & snacks.  Ages 21+ only. Cocktail attire or your “Summer SHYC Best”. (The RSVPs for this event are closed.)
  • Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast – Sunday June 18th (8-10AM). Join us for our annual Father's Day Breakfast, for pancakes, sausage, fruit, OJ, and coffee. Food to be billed to your member account. No reservations required - just show up! This is a Family Friendly event.

  • 4th of July Weekend - Dinner Dance & Racing! This year the SHYC 4th of July Dinner/Dance will be on Saturday, July 1st at 6pm (invites will be sent next week). Racing will be held on Saturday July 1st and Trophy Races on Tuesday July 4th.

Junior Programs - Sailing, Swimming, Tennis - Classes Start Monday June 19th 

Women's Sailing Program (spots available)! 
This year’s SHYC ladies sailing program will feature a series of structured, learn-to-sail classes focused on learning fundamental sailing skills, building confidence, and developing sailing knowledge. All skill levels are welcome, no prior sailing experience required. This program is run in provided Sonars.
  • Program Dates: Ladies sailing will be offered on five Tuesday evenings – June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25 and August 1. When you sign up, you will select your preferred Tuesday nights (minimum of three required to sign-up)
  • Program Cost: $180/sailor, three-week minimum participation ($60 per additional evening).

ATTENTION ALL SAILORS: Volunteers Needed for Race Committee on Saturdays!!

We are seeking Race Committee Volunteers to support our Saturday morning (Lasers and Juniors) and our Saturday afternoon racing series (Sonars and PHRF Boats). We are looking for assistants on the RC boat and mark boat drivers and helpers. The RC and Mark boats are provided by the club. Training is available if you would like to be taught how to help support our RC and racers. Use the SIGN-UP Link to pick the dates that work best for you and to indicate which type of role you would like to fill - we have MANY open slots to fill! MORE Details on RC Positions & Times:
  • Head Race Committee Volunteer – This volunteer will drive the RC boat for the morning or afternoon and run the races. This job requires a knowledge of RC duties, starting procedures including flag sequences, and ability to safely operate and anchor a boat.
  • Mark Boat Driver - Knowledge of safe small motorboat operation required (you will mostly like be in a club RIB) and the ability to pick-up and drop marks.
  • RC Helper - Assistants will help out on the race committee boat or mark boat as needed. No RC experience required, you will not be asked to drive a powerboat. You will be asked to help write down scores, help with flags, and help with pulling and dropping marks.
  • Afternoon RC Duty: Noon to 4pm
  • Morning RC Duty: 8AM to Noon

Adult Sailing: SHYC offers lots of opportunities to get out on the water and race! 

  • SHYC Summer 2023 Racing Schedule - View the Dates & Races - In accordance with the Sailing Instructions the harbor start for all Saturday afternoon racing classes will be a half hour before the first warning. The Sailing Instructions, which may change, will always take precedence.

  • Ladies Tuesday Night Sailing Program - Tuesday  night ladies sailing classes, no experience needed - Sign-up online and learn more.
  • Adult Intro to Keelboat Sailing (Friday 7/14 & Sunday 8/20): Join the sailing fun at our Adult Learn-to-Sail Keelboat Sailing Sessions - Friday July 14th (5-7pm)  and/or Sunday August 20th (2-4pm). This program will offer a fun, no-stress opportunity for new sailors (no sailing experience needed) to get out for a sail on SHYC member owned keelboats and learn basic skills such as boating terminology, parts of the boat, safety, setting the sails, steering, trimming sails, and returning to the mooring (or just go for a ride!). Flag & Burgee Etiquette  
Flag etiquette is an important part of yacht club tradition. Thank you to Past Commodore Mike Schnitt for updating the Flag Etiquette section of the SHYC Yearbook, and for providing this special extract version. The first part of the document covers the general flag etiquette as provided by The Cruising Club of America.  The second part of the document covers our specific SHYC flag traditions, including the canon!  Please take the time to review this document so you are ready to proudly display your SHYC burgee and respect our SHYC flag traditions.

Good Luck to Wylder Smith - Competing in the Optimist World Champs!

Wylder is getting ready to compete in the Optimist World Championship which are taking place in Costa Brava Spain, June 15-25.  Currently, Wylder is ranked #7 in the World of all Optimist Sailors in the Star Sailors World Rankins.  Good luck Wylder from everyone at SHYC!!
