From June 17 to July 9th 2023, over 100 volunteer community scientists visited Sonoma Coast State Park (SCSP) to provide valuable iNaturalist data to help protect California's coastal ecosystems by participating in Snapshot Cal Coast. Nearly 500 species were identified. Among the 5 most commonly identified species, Velella velella (or by-the-wind-sailor) captured the curiosity of many. Statewide - Sonoma County's very own Sarah Reid recorded the most observations with 372 species! Congratulations, Sarah, on your designation as most prolific critter finder and thank you for helping kicking off this important community science project with a BioBlitz! See what else was found in SCSP here.

July 7, 2023 -- Marion McCall, Mary Killian, Bill Perry and I had the pleasure of monitoring Gull Rock this morning. We had our fingers crossed as we were fogged out during last Friday’s monitor. The weather cooperated as did the wind.

Bill caught sight of an adult PEFA up on the cliffs and it made us so happy! The CORA have a nest now in that area and chased the PEFA away. The two CORA are now adolescents and getting large. There were a steady stream of BRPE moving north during our time there. -- Photos and report by Ellen Rilla-Laherty, Volunteer Seabird Monitor.

Trail Crew at Sonoma Coast

July 5, 2023: Nine enthusiastic Volunteers joined forces to clear brush, Willows and grasses along the Northern section of the Kortum Trail. Tim Mayer and Bill Krawets headed to Goat Rock Road and cleared the Kortum Trail from Blind Beach to the Sunset Rocks. The remainder of us headed to Shell Beach and cleared the trail from Shell Beach to the Sunset Rocks. Joe Riedel weed whipped the Shell Beach parking Lot while Paul Schwarz and Keith Flood weed whipped the trail to the Sunset Rocks. Jim O'Donnell and I armed ourselves with Brush Blades and worked on the heavy grasses, Coyote Brush and Willows along the two boardwalks. Jamie Archer and Marion McCall cleaned up the mess we all left behind. Lunch on the trail with some of Flora's cookies was quite a treat. Many park visitors thanked us for all the hard work, was that ever rewarding!-- Rich Lawton, CSP/Stewards Volunteer Trail Crew Coordinator
