Dear Friends,
I’ve been thinking a lot this week about the mission of the Church because this Fall, I will be tasked with submitting my Doctor of Ministry thesis proposal. A significant amount of time in the D.Min. program is dedicated to understanding and leading congregations in adaptive change. This is change not solely for the sake of change but change that is necessary for us to continue to thrive, or in some cases learn to thrive in the first place. What does a thriving church look like? It is one that is grounded in love – love for God and love for each other. It can also include a love for tradition, however, the danger in this one is that we cannot forsake the love of the other for the sake of tradition. In the past few months, I have overheard several conversations on Sunday mornings, most often in the church, that have been less than loving. Murmuring is the word I would use, that is complaining and gossiping, or what we good church folk may call “sharing our concerns,” but with the wrong people and with the wrong intent. I encourage us all to be conscious of what we say and how we say it. Others ARE listening. I recently spoke with a person who visited a few times earlier this year and they gave me two reasons why they are not coming back. The first was all the gossip, and negative gossip at that, they overheard, and the second reason is that no one greeted this person or spoke to them before or after the service. That, my friends, is not what loving community looks like, and I know that we can love better than that. I know it because I have seen it and experienced it. The job of welcoming and greeting visitors is not solely the job of Clergy or the Ushers and Greeters, it is the job of ALL of us. Even if we’re shy and introverted. If we are to thrive, we must love each other and that love must be seen and experienced by others as well. “Let us love one another as Christ loved us.”

Undercroft Kitchen Safety
While in the Undercroft Kitchen on June 21st, it was noted that one of the ovens was still on at 350 degrees. This prompted the question...
Can leaving the oven on actually start a fire?
Yes, leaving the oven on can start a fire. If the oven is left on for an extended period of time, it can overheat and cause a fire. This is more likely to happen if the oven is turned to a high temperature, so it's important to exercise caution when cooking at high heat. It is important to always turn off the oven when you are finished cooking/baking.

Volunteers meet just once a month, on the last Sunday of each month, and work collectively to shop, assemble, pack, and delivery food to individuals and families in need.
The main goal of the Family Food Share ministry is to assist food-insecure families in the Bloom Trail High School district.

St. Chrysostom's Begins a Ministry with Asylum Seekers
The Gold Coast community of which St. Chrysostom’s is a part has also rallied behind the effort. Donations by the bagful began appearing throughout the day as news of the asylum seekers’ needs spread, and church staff scrambled to store the growing offerings. “It’s all rather Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” Kohlbeck said. “We don’t always know how a donation has found its way to us.”
Although St. Chrysostom’s networks and neighbors have responded generously to the need in its midst, the parish is still seeking several kinds of help, Kohlbeck said. Material gifts are also needed. Those include:
- Bedding & Towels
- Rolling Suitcases
- Baby Strollers
- Infant & Toddler Car Seats
- Diapers
- Pots & Pans
- And, other basic kitchen items
Donations can be dropped off at the church office at 1424 N Dearborn Street, Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
