Network Updates & Announcements

Clean Air Networks Conference:

We have just returned from two immensely inspiring days at the Clean Air Networks Conference 2023 that was kindly hosted by the University of Birmingham at Edgbaston Park Hotel. Grab a cuppa and let me take you through the exciting whirlwind of these two days!

On Wednesday, 5th July the conference opened with the Martin Williams Lecture on 'The past, present, and future prospects for air quality management and health in the UK', delivered by Roy Harrison, before an introduction to all eight Clean Air Networks, represented by their PI's, including Ruth Doherty for HEICCAM. We then had to make the difficult choice which of the upcoming parallel sessions to attend in the afternoon. HEICCAM members Amber Yeoman, Phil Symonds, Lia Chatzidiakou, Lauren Ferguson, Malina Modlich, Alejandro Moreno-Rangel, Sumil Thakrar, Mark Miller, and Zongbo Shi all held talks or chaired sessions on Wednesday. Afterwards, we came together in a plenary session to reflect on the day and discuss our ideas and insights, before being treated to a delicious vegetarian dinner.

On Thursday, 6th July we were launched into day 2 of the conference by Anna Hansell, who gave a moving and inspiring lecture on 'The need for action and engagement in science' in memory of the late Paul Wilkinson, a valued colleague and driving force within the HEICCAM network who passed away last year. We then once more split up into different parallel sessions, a number of which were presented or chaired by HEICCAM members Miranda Loh, Connor Smith, Ruth Doherty, and Douglas Booker. To close the conference, we came together to reflect on and discuss the value of the networks and generate ideas for how we could ensure a lasting legacy of our work.

Building Centre Retrofit Exhibition and Talks

The Building Centre in London are running an exhibition ‘Retrofit 23: Towards a Deep Retrofit of Homes at Scale’. The exhibition ‘looks at how we achieve residential retrofitting at scale and focuses on how improving the performance of a home brings economic, social, and environmental benefits’, and will run until 29th September 2023 In addition to the displays, there are a series of both online and in-person free talks (throughout June, July and September) concerning topics such as retrofitting historic homes, reflecting on retrofit performance over ten years, and breathable insulation and healthy air quality. You can find information about the exhibition here and the talks here.

Call for Papers: Special Edition on Health Inequalities and Indoor Environments

Anna Mavrogianni (HEICCAM) and Marcella Ucci are guest-editing a Special Edition of Buildings & Cities centred around the topic of Health Inequalities and Indoor Environments. They welcome multi- and trans-disciplinary perspectives that offer an in-depth understanding of complex sociotechnical dynamics that drive inequalities and inequities in the built environment, whilst maintaining a robust foundation in engineering-led indoor environment science. Contributions should enable fundamental advances in the scientific understanding of:

  • the main factors affecting inequalities and inequities in indoor environmental exposures, and their effects on human health and wellbeing, under a changing climate

  • systems for identifying and monitoring areas of high risk

  • optimum pathways and policies to create healthy, safe indoor environments for all

Please see here for full details. The deadline for abstract submission is 12th July, 2023.

Atmospheric Science Letters Special Editions:

Atmospheric Science Letters are running a special issue focusing on `Air Pollution at the Indoor-Outdoor interface for Built Environments.’ They are calling for papers considering (but not limited to) the following topics: modelling of transport processes and dispersion of air pollutants (biological and manmade contaminants) within or across indoor and outdoor environments; the influence of source type and location on individual or population air pollution exposures; the relationship of behaviour /activity to levels of indoor and outdoor pollution exposure; the influence of indoor/outdoor environmental conditions on the development and transport of localized air pollution plumes; and the relationship of indoor and outdoor urban environments to the air pollution exposure of different vulnerable populations.

You can find more information on the call for papers here.

Upcoming Events & Conferences

Routes to Clean Air Conference

This conference, organised by the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM), is aimed towards air quality practitioners and associated professionals. It will take place from 10-11th October, 2023 in Manchester and currently welcomes abstract submissions on a variety of topics, including Indoor Air Quality and Measurement and Assessment of Air Quality (incl. low-cost technologies). See here for the full call.

RECLAIM Network Plus Conference

11th September 2023, University of Surrey. RECLAIM (Reclaiming Forgotten Cities – Turning cities from vulnerable spaces to healthy spaces for people) is a ‘one-stop-shop’ for towns and cities to find the information and support you need to install green and blue infrastructure in your communities and to put you in touch with others with similar experiences. Green and blue infrastructure related topics that will feature include: clean air, parks, trees, flooding, biodiversity, health & wellbeing. The event will provide an opportunity to network with city officials, people from business and industry, NGO’s and academics from right across the globe who have a passion for making communities greener, more resilient and prosperous. You can register here.

Future seminars

We have plans for a series of short form (15 minutes or less) ‘work in progress’ talks for online lunchtime seminars. If you would be interested in sharing your work with the network, getting some interesting feedback and different perspectives, let us know and we will facilitate a seminar. Alternatively, if you have a suggestion of a speaker (for a long or short talk), let us know.

HEICCAM is hosting a seminar on 31st July in Edinburgh. This will be a talk given by Amy McCarron from the University of Stirling, on her work around the health impacts of PM2.5 exposure. The seminar will be held in-person at the University of Edinburgh and online via zoom. Details will be shared with the network in due course.

Early Career Researchers Updates

We have begun work on an ECR-led collaborative article on the future of indoor air quality. This work will be ongoing over the next few months in regular online working sessions and we are excited to see how it will continue to progress.
