Deadly Floods in Italy

The floods that engulfed parts of Italy last month killed 15 people and tens of thousands of farmed animals. Animals drowned or were crushed as buildings collapsed during landslides.

Among the first photojournalists to arrive at factory farms to cover the disaster were Stefano Belacchi and our 2023 Senior Fellow, Selene Magnolia, both working with Essere Animali to share the plight of farmed animals.

June 8 was World Ocean Day, a United Nations event dedicated to celebrating the ocean and the vital ecosystems it supports. To help people tell the stories of marine animals, we chose our Top Ten Images for World Ocean Day

Did you know we create special image galleries to help journalists and NGOs? We love translation apps! They allow us to correspond with many of our We Animals contributors. This month, we connected with Polish animal rights photographer Andrew Skowron about how he captures such startling images, and how he has survived so much field work over the years.

“The camera in my hands is a sort of weapon; thanks to it, I can reveal what is invisible to most people – pain in the name of consumerism. But it also gives me a chance to show the few who have survived.” - Andrew Skowron

Photo of the Month: Hell and High Water

Extreme weather in Italy left pigs trapped in flood waters for days. At an Italian factory farm, two pigs await their fate. Photo: Lugo, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, 2023. Selene Magnolia / Essere Animali / We Animals Media
Our photo of the month features pigs standing nose-to-nose during the recent floods in Italy. What are they thinking and feeling? The soft connection between these individuals – who are likely outdoors for the first time – contrasts the bleak world of murky floodwaters and grim industrial buildings surrounding them.

With your monthly support, we can continue to be first on the scene to report on how non-human animals are impacted by devastating climate catastrophes, and tell the stories that other media are not.

Wild Horse Roundup

The Bureau of Land Management's annual roundup of wild horses in America's rangeland has become a focal point of controversy and intense debate.

The open range is shrinking, cattle ranchers want more grazing space and horse lovers are grieved to see these iconically fierce and graceful horses captured, separated from their families, branded and sentenced to a life of captivity (or if "adopted" by a kill buyer, to slaughter).

We Animals Media photojournalist Scott Wilson was on the scene to document the roundup in Nevada.

In Case You Missed It:

June 14 was the International Awareness Day to Ban Live Exports. Each year, billions of animals are packed into ships and trucks going in one direction only. On their journey they face extreme temperatures, hunger, thirst, disease, exhaustion and collapse.

In this film, join We Animals Media founder Jo-Anne McArthur as she climbs transport trucks, navigates dustry roads and follows animals on their journey to slaughter. The cruel live export trade must end.
