Hawai'i Art News From

Aloha Friends,
It’s time for the Tropical Artist Party of the year on July 9th at our original castaway beach party location in Waimānalo.

The 2023 Artist Retreat is set to take place with a great cast of participating artists including special guest artist Wade Koniakowsky from Carlsbad, California.

The Art Tip this time is on pulling out the knives (pallet knives).

The Featured Episode this time is on Papahānaumokuākea and features a song by that name, performed by Kawika Kahiapo.

I’ll share some pictures from the recent Earth Day paint-along, and an Ohana Birthday Painting Party in Hilo.

Enjoy all this, and more, in our Favorite Photos album.
I hope you Enjoy Summer in its Full Artistic Glory.

With Thanks and Aloha from me,
.
(Gilligan) Yes i edited the spelling myself...

ART TIP - By the Knife

What do a "slice" and a "skim" have in common? They are both words I use to describe strokes of the palette knife.

A "slice" describes a method of unloading a knife full of paint onto the canvas, while a "skim" is the technique of laying a wet color over another wet color without digging up the color underneath.

A big reason folks love knife paintings so much is because of the thickness of the paint and the shadows created by the application  by knife. It is actually "sculpting" with paint adding a third dimension to the art.

The thing I like about painting with knives is that it takes me way beyond my comfort zone, and that's eventually how i grow into a new comfort zone.

Sometimes, I'll use both brush And knife techniques on a painting like on this one above called "Mānana from Kaupo".
