In “The Sticky Truth—Part 2” LIVE episode that aired June 19, 11:30 am EST, host Seth Gladden and guest Shelley Ackerman of Taylor Adhesives continued this 3-part series to make the very technical more relatable when it comes to adhesives. “By understanding the terminology, you’ll gain confidence in selling more adhesives,” observed Shelley.

Seth and Shelley discussed a list of terms frequently heard in describing adhesives across the industry as a whole but are often misunderstood: Flash time, open time, working time, dry time, cure time, pot life, acclimation, wet set, semi-wet set, dry set, soft set, firm set, hard set, light traffic, high traffic, and heavy rolling loads.

Capturing Sustainability at Evans Adhesive

In 2020, Evans Adhesive in Columbus, Ohio, began a water-saving initiative to support our sustainability efforts and also capture savings for the plant. Evans’ plant manager Steve Overby, now our Flooring Division Director of Operations, pioneered this project which resulted in the conservation of more than 4.2 million gallons of water and $60,000 in savings. The plant heats a number of its products, bringing them up to 200+ degrees. Prior to the water capture initiative, once a batch was heated, ambient temperature water was run through the coals of the mixer to cool the system. This process could take up to three hours to fully cool, using a large amount of city water to do so. The cooling water would run through the hot coals, cool the equipment, and then the non-contact water would go directly to a creek next to the plant that leads to a local river. This requires a permit from the city to ensure the water is not polluting the local ecosystem. Steve recognized that this process was a pure loss for the plant. Because they were working with non-contact, clean water, Steve had the idea to reuse it in a new batch of water-based adhesive. The team at Evans installed a 3,000-gallon tank that would recapture the water used for cooling the system and then repurpose it for new batches of adhesive. Evans’ water capture initiative stands as an inspiring example of the positive impact that our sites can make on both the environment and our bottom line through sustainable practices, demonstrating that sustainability and profitability can coexist harmoniously.
