IDZ NEWSLETTER

Dear readers,

We welcome the Berlin summer with a lot of bicycle ringing to show that we disapprove of the recently announced partial halt of the Berlin Mobility Law, which mandated measures to prioritize bicycles and public transportation over cars in Berlin’s transportation planning in the future.

Apart from that, we are looking forward to the IDZ excursion with Silke Ihden-Rothkirch to the Retrotopia exhibition at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, to which we cordially invite you on 11 July.

By the way, our exhibition of the winners of the German Ecodesign Award can be seen at designtransfer in Berlin until the end of July.

Hope to see you soon, many ringing greetings
Your IDZ Team

IDZ Member of the Month
Prof. Matthias Ries

Our member of the month July/August 2023 is the product designer and university lecturer Prof. Matthias Ries. After studying at the HfG Karlsruhe, he founded his studio in Berlin. He has been active in teaching for about ten years, currently as a professor at the HAWK in Hildesheim. Here he is primarily concerned with theoretical aspects of product design. He is currently researching with his students in the project “With a little help of AI friends” how artificial intelligence can be used as a tool in product design. By the way, you can get a good overview of what the HAWK's Faculty of Design has to offer from 4 to 6 August at the Werkschau.

Matthias Ries' ongoing Ph.D. at UdK Berlin investigates cultural memory and the collecting and accumulating of products throughout human history. He is interested in the selection criteria that play a role in archiving into material memory, and the extent to which gaps in cultural memory are created, or deliberately created, as a result.

Together with Silke Ihden-Rothkirch, we invite you to a tour of the special exhibition “Retrotopia - Design for Socialist Spaces” at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin on 11 July. Eleven “design capsules” show design projects, many of them unknown, from former socialist countries in Europe, including former Yugoslavia. Curator Dr. Claudia Banz, Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, had invited co-curatorial teams from Bratislava, Brno, Budapest, Eisenhüttenstadt, Kyiv, Ljubljana, Prague, Tallinn, Vilnius, Warsaw, Zagreb, and Berlin to stage one contribution each for the public space and the private sphere.

IDZ member Silke Ihden-Rothkirch was involved in the project as co-curator and editor and will accompany the tour through the exhibition. In addition, you can look forward to a greeting from Dr. Banz, interesting visual axes, unusual constellations and impulses for further explorations, and a glass of wine afterward, to which we cordially invite you.

We ask for registration.

Iondesign
Drinking water fountain

In mid-May, the drinking water fountain designed by Iondesign was connected to the Hamburg drinking water network. Once again, accessibility and inclusion were essential in this successful street furniture design, one of the reasons for which it was awarded the international design prize FOCUS OPEN 2023. Congratulations!

Call for submission - How to do less

How can “less” be designed? How can everyone have more, not just those who have too much anyway? How can we create more of what everyone really needs - and less of what no one lacks? If you have good ideas, apply by 10 August for one of two short presentations at the “Stadt.Land.Schluss.” symposium on 10 November.

German Design Council
Survey Value of Design

With a short survey, the German Design Council, in cooperation with the Institute for Design Research at the h_da University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, would like to investigate where and how design is anchored in German companies. Do designers in your company work on innovations or corporate strategies? Does design play a role in differentiation or transformation in your company?

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL

Hamburg
MK&G Exhibition German Design Graduates

From 1 September to 8 October, the MK&G will present outstanding graduates from renowned German design and art colleges in product and industrial design under the title “Dare to Design.” The German Design Graduates 2023 exhibition provides an overview of the most current positions of young designers from Germany.

London
The Design Museum: Design Researchers in Residence - Islands

The program “Design Researchers in Residence” supports design researchers at the beginning of their careers for one year with a research project on a specific topic. In 2022/23, the focus is on “islands.” These are not considered in isolation but are defined by the connections that form at their edges: to seas and oceans, to their ecosystems, and other islands near and far. In this respect, they are presented as interdependent nodes in networks. The exhibition, which runs until 24 September, allows visitors to learn more about approaches to design research and discover new proposals for the future of design through films, drawings, and objects.

Munich
Die Neue Sammlung: Paula Scher - Type is Image

With “Type is Image,” Die Neue Sammlung continues its tradition of inviting influential contemporary designers to a site-specific installation. Paula Scher, who has been shaping graphic design with her innovative creativity for over five decades, has accepted this invitation with a walk-in show of her work. On view through 22 September, the exhibition features commissioned works from Scher’s early days to the present: from the look and feel of the Public Theater in New York to the campaign for Rockaway Beach following the destruction of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, to her interior and façade designs.

Paris
Galerie kreo: Konstantin Grcic - Transformers

Until 26 August, lamps and tables by Konstantin Grcic are on view at Galerie kreo under the title “Transformers.” Once again, Grcic reveals his never-ending fascination for a tangible industrial aesthetic. The title recognizably refers to a series of films featuring intergalactic robots that can transform into various creatures or objects.

Zurich
Museum of Design Zurich: Repair Revolution!

The design already decides how well an object can be repaired. In mechanical engineering, for example, maintenance and spare parts are integral to design practice, but in product design and architecture, they are the exception. There is another way! Repairing is no longer an emergency solution but a cultural, social, and economic practice that should be taken seriously and offers a counter-design to the throwaway society. Until 15 October, the exhibition presents the vision of a repair society and examines the role of design on the way to this goal.

TOURS AND ANNUAL EXHIBITIONS

In the coming weeks, the tours and annual exhibitions of the design and art faculties of many colleges and universities are coming up again.
