HOT LIT!
curated by scott alexander hess novelist/teacher/queer new yorker

Above: Artist: Jill Freedman, Name: Lighting Up

When I first moved to New York City in the 1980s there were many a night I would stumble over the cobblestone streets of the frisky and wild Meathpacking District looking for trouble (for the fictionalized details take a peek at my very first novel Diary of a Sex Addict).

So I was thrilled to discover the amazing exhibit: A District Defined: Streets, Sex, and Survival. The imagery from a slew of fantastic artists is not to be missed! Hurry it ends July 9!

Here's the skinny:

The Meatpacking District BID in collaboration with human rights activist, election reformer and producer, Tim Hayes, present A District Defined: Streets, Sex, and Survival, a photography exhibit inviting visitors to connect with the Meatpacking District and its denizens during a defining era that laid the foundation for what the neighborhood is today. The exhibition pays homage to the District’s rich history while acknowledging the hardships and struggles that shaped it. Resurrecting a feeling that defined the time period and providing visitors with an opportunity to observe the neighborhood’s evolution.

Oh that cover! It snagged my attention immediately and led me to discover Greg Marshall's wonderful new memoir.

Leg: the Story of a Limb and the Boy Who Grew from It, is called “One hell of an entertaining book.” BUZZFEED, Most Anticipated LGBTQ+ Books of 2023.

The book is described as: "an extraordinarily funny and insightful memoir from a daring new voice. Packed with outrageous stories of a singular childhood, it is also a startlingly original examination of what it means to transform when there are parts of yourself you can’t change, a moving portrait of a family in crisis, and a tale of resilience of spirit."
When I first spied the cover of the fab new Fire Island Tea, it yanked me right back to my days as editor of Next Magazine (it was a competitor to Homo Xtra known as HX and if you have no idea what I'm talking about it's OK - this girl has been around NYC awhile! Just check out the HX historical instagram).

The launch party event on Fire Isle was awesome so check out what's up in the debut issue which is described as "A storytelling platform and publication. The brainchild of the Naughty Pine and Books and Boys, a glimpse into the unseen and untold of queer Fire Island."

Continuing the theme of rich and edgy photography, I fell head over high-heels for photographer Ryan Rude's Rude Polaroids.

Winner of a Glam award for NYC Best Nightlife Photographer, Rude's Instagram states simply: "Polaroid/Film and Queer Shit." The Brooklyn based photog specializes in portraits, Queer nightlife and drag.

Hot Lit Finale!

And finally I have to give a BIG shoutout to my amazing hubby for creating these hand-crafted gift boxes going out this summer to promote my new novella A SEASON IN DELHI which releases Nov. 12 (for Diwali) from Rebel Satori Press. And YASSSS you can pre-order.

Stay tuned for details on winning a gift box, readings, the Diwali themed launch party and more!

Oh! And while your at the beach or by the pool, take a peek at my friend mistergoodyear who placed a first published piece in Litbreak magazine!
