JULY 2023 NEWSLETTER

July PSS Meeting Recap

  • Yvette Mozie-Ross and Dale Bittinger spoke with us about the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action
    • Yvette provided us with an excellent TL;DR: The impact for UMBC of the SCOTUS decision on the use of affirmative action in college admissions is none.  As Dr. Sheares Ashby noted in her statement - while we understand and are very much concerned about the broad impact of this decision on access to higher education and advancements in diversity,  at UMBC race is not considered in our admissions review and has not been for over 25 years.

It does, however, raise other questions for us around what might be the implications of this recent SCOTUS decision for other practices we employ - specifically, we regard recruitment and yield activities that target students of various race/ethnic groups.  These are questions we are currently exploring with our VP for DEI and our University General Counsel’s Office.

Meet the Senator - Danielle Brown

I started at UMBC as a student in 2008, and began working full-time for the Division of Information Technology in 2014, first as a contracted assistant for AV Services. Since then I've worked up from doing system repair and installation to my current role overseeing design and engineering for classroom and meeting room AV systems on campus. I've been a PSS senator for about a year, but I started attending PSS meetings regularly as a non-senator during the campus shutdown in 2020. I assist with the Demographic Alignment and Staff Outreach and Development committees for PSS, and I represent AV design interests as a member of the Classroom Committee. Outside of UMBC, I live in Pigtown, and I love music, movies, cooking, and reading.
