Tenant Protections Ordinance

📍Online via ZOOM

⏰Monday, July 10 | 9 AM

On July 10, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will be discussing adoption of a comprehensive Tenant Protections Ordinance.

The Tenant Protection Ordinance (Ordinance) establishes basic protections for tenants in unincorporated San Mateo County. These protections seek to limit the number of tenant displacements by narrowing the grounds on which landlords may force out current tenants or reject applications of prospective tenants. Learn more about the Tenant Protections Ordinance with this factsheet from Faith In Action.

Eviction is one of the primary reasons for displacement in San Mateo County. It has deep and long-lasting consequences for physical, mental, and financial health. Even just the threat of eviction can pressure tenants into leaving their housing or tolerating poor housing conditions. In a report developed by the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, 50% of households that defended evictions in court in 2014 experienced at least one period of homelessness afterwards.

This ordinance will strengthen our rights to prevent mistreatment, close existing loopholes in the law, and ensure that there are real consequences that will deter wrongful behavior. Together, we can ensure that there are meaningful and accessible options for tenants to get information and enforce their rights.

Send a letter RIGHT NOW in support of the Ordinance to your County Supervisor! Make sure to review the form letter before sending, as there are a few areas you'll need to edit.

Sign up for notifications on July 10 to call into the Board of Supervisors meeting to make public comment.

THANK YOU

For Helping Us to Preserve Affordable Housing Funds

in the City of San Jose

To San Jose Housing Advocates,

Thank you to all who called, emailed or showed up in person to the San Jose City Council Measure E hearings to voice your opposition to the proposal to cut $50 million in affordable housing funds from the budget to be used instead for construction of homeless shelters. Because of you, on June 13, 2023, City Council overwhelmingly supported a new proposal (with some modifications) from Councilmembers Davis, Torres and Ortiz to:

  1. Preserve most of the affordable housing funds to continue building more permanent affordable homes for Extremely Low and Low Income households including people with disabilities, seniors, veterans and the unhoused.

  2. Found alternative sources to increase funding for homeless shelters and

  3. Committed to studying long-term solutions for funding construction and operation of new homeless shelters without impacting permanent affordable housing funds in the future.

Warm Regards,

Housing Choices
