Dear Friends,
There are so many issues in our society that demand our Christian moral response that they often fall off the radar. Since the 2020 election cycle we do not hear as much about the immigration crisis as we did, and this may leave some to think it has resolved. It has not. The issue is still alive and while a few aspects may be a bit more humane, others certainly are not.
In 2019 the Tortilla Detention Center in Texas housed more than 6,200 children who had been separated from their families. A group of teachers invited some of those children to express pride in their country of origin through art. The result is the Uncaged Art Exhibit that was recently housed at St. James Cathedral and is currently at St. John's in Chicago. This exhibit showcases 29 pieces of artwork, each of which depicts the story of a child's return to their families.
We are cohosting this exhibit with Church of the Holy Family and Trinity Lutheran Church in Park Forest beginning July 22 through August 6 at Holy Family. More details are included in the flyer below. We are in need of volunteers to help staff the exhibit for the following days: July 24, 25, 26, 29, August 1, 2, 4 and 5 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you are available to be present at Holy Family any of those times, please let me know. There will be flyers available at the back of the church beginning this Sunday. Please take one and invite others to visit this powerful exhibit.
Grace and peace,
Fr. Jeremy

St. Stephen's Fund
Please make a donation to help St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Douglas, Arizona rebuild. Their building was a total loss after an arsonist set fire on Monday, May 22. The Church is believed to have been targeted because of its work with refugees crossing the southern border. Please keep this community in your prayers.
To make a donation, please click here and select "St. Stephen's Fund" in the "Fund" dropdown menu, OR place a check in the offering plate on Sunday and write "St. Stephen's Fund" in the memo line.

Undercroft Kitchen Safety
While in the Undercroft Kitchen on June 21st, it was noted that one of the ovens was still on at 350 degrees. This prompted the question...
Can leaving the oven on actually start a fire?
Yes, leaving the oven on can start a fire. If the oven is left on for an extended period of time, it can overheat and cause a fire. This is more likely to happen if the oven is turned to a high temperature, so it's important to exercise caution when cooking at high heat. It is important to always turn off the oven when you are finished cooking/baking.

Fifth Sunday After Pentecost
Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We are always looking for more helping hands to keep this outreach program up and running.
Volunteers meet just once a month, on the last Sunday of each month, and work collectively to shop, assemble, pack, and delivery food to individuals and families in need.
The main goal of the Family Food Share ministry is to assist food-insecure families in the Bloom Trail High School district.

By signing up with RaiseRight you can do your shopping (at most of the stores you are already shopping at) with prepaid cards and RaiseRight offers a percentage of what you spend back to St. John's. There is NO cost to you.
This is also a great way to purchase gift cards to give as birthday or Christmas presents, or just a little something for yourself.

St. Chrysostom's Begins a Ministry with Asylum Seekers
The Gold Coast community of which St. Chrysostom’s is a part has also rallied behind the effort. Donations by the bagful began appearing throughout the day as news of the asylum seekers’ needs spread, and church staff scrambled to store the growing offerings. “It’s all rather Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” Kohlbeck said. “We don’t always know how a donation has found its way to us.”
Although St. Chrysostom’s networks and neighbors have responded generously to the need in its midst, the parish is still seeking several kinds of help, Kohlbeck said. Material gifts are also needed. Those include:
- Bedding & Towels
- Rolling Suitcases
- Baby Strollers
- Infant & Toddler Car Seats
- Diapers
- Pots & Pans
- And, other basic kitchen items
Donations can be dropped off at the church office at 1424 N Dearborn Street, Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
Email Liz Kohlbeck to volunteer.
