Elmwood Park Neighborhood History Tour

From 2022-2023, the Elmwood Park Neighborhood Association worked with Historic Columbia to develop and launch an online Neighborhood History Tour. The research was completed by our neighbor and Historic Columbia Director of Preservation, John Sherrer.

The tour is comprised of eight sections:

  • Development, Early Resident, & Street Names
  • Before Elmwood
  • Moving Around
  • Places of Rest & Worship
  • Stylish Living
  • For a Better Neighborhood
  • Leisure & Learning
  • Quality Goods & Service

This project was made possible by generous funding from the Richland County Conservation Commission, an ACTION Grant from the City of Columbia and our annual Halloween 5k fundraiser.

July Yard of the Month

Congratulations to Eric Shealy, Rob Davis and Jon Robertson at 2255 Wayne St. for being selected as July's Yard of the Month (YOM) winners! Over the last three years, the homeowners ripped out the original landscaping to pursue a more beneficial landscape for birds and pollinators.

A big thank you to Image 360 for providing us with beautiful YOM signage and to Gardner's Outpost for providing all winners of Elmwood Park's YOM a gift certificate to use at their store on Franklin St in Cottontown. We appreciate your support!

The Elmwood Park YOM Committee is in search of new members! If you’re interested in helping to nominate and select winners each month, please email Dave Barbeau.

Summer Porch Parties

Thank you to Iron Hill Brewery for hosting our July Porch Party (brewery edition). We had a great turnout and enjoyed many brews!

Interested in hosting a porch party? Email board@historicelmwoodpark.org with your name, address and preferred month. The parties are potluck; hosts need only provide whatever food and drink they'd like, a place for people to gather, and (preferably) restroom access. We'll connect you with our Porch Party Captain, Bart Tittle, to help with coordination.

Gardener’s Outpost Tip of the Month

It's time to think about planting fall vegetables. The No. 1 question we get at the store is, "Should I pull out all my spring vegetable plants"? We usually tell people to keep the best-producing plants going, even their tomato plants. Tomatoes will stop producing fruit as the weather stays consistently above 90 degrees but will start producing again when the weather cools and the nighttime temperatures are still above 60.

So save the prettiest spring plants for a second harvest and pull any that were not performing as well to begin the fall planting season!
Need help or have questions? Visit Gardener’s Outpost at 1211 Franklin Street!
