Dear Friends,

With a new video launching, and more videos rapidly coming to fruition; it's been an exciting and productive month..., and I still managed to squeeze in a week in Maine.

Maine is one of my favorite places in the world. It offers an opportunity to breathe deeply and reflect on what matters. It's a place to review the year that's passed so far and to think about the mission and purpose for the coming months.

Epictetus often wove wrestling into his philosophy. Perhaps that's why he's had such an influence on my thinking over the years.

Here's what I've been up to and thinking about.

June 30th was special. If you follow me, you're well aware that I'm consumed by the idea of maximizing performance and exercising "cognitive dominance" over the 'pheres' that get in the way of peak performance. As an ex-NCAA wrestler, as a coach, and as a neurosurgeon I've been on a mission for many years to understand performance. You can imagine the pleasure of sitting down to talk performance with psychologist Ashley Zultanky, Psy.D., and with my own son, Marine 1stLT Patrick McLaughlin. We covered a LOT of ground..., from the physical, to psychological theory, to the extreme demands of military practice. It's 40 intense minutes that I hope you'll watch and learn from.

Also, I suggest you pay a visit to Dr. Zultanky's biography on the Behavior Therapy Associates website. Be sure to scroll down the page, and you will then have the opportunity to subscribe to their Newsletter. It's highly recommended.

It's About to Get Real!

After the incredible success of the "Day In The Life of a Neurosurgeon" series. (600,000 views and counting), we decided to launch a new video series. You could call it "Another Day In The Life of a Neurosurgeon".

We're calling it "Real Stories". You'll meet Real Patients confronting life-altering conditions. You'll learn about treatments, and if you're a med student you'll also get a glimpse of patient interaction. The first video is just days away!

Follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram to stay up to date on the release of this important new video series.

Trenton Youth Wrestling and Learning Center

Our annual FREE Summer Camp has been taking place over the July 10-14 week. It's been a fitting exclamation mark to the May 31st announcement of the TYW Funding Campaign. Thank you to Foundation Academies for hosting, and to all the coaches and wrestlers who took part.
To learn more about the Campaign, please visit and bookmark trentonyouthwrestling.org.  For pictures from the Summer Camp and more, follow the club on Facebook.

Maine

My neurosurgical "day job" is highly technical, demanding, and can definitely bring with it a healthy dollop of stress. There's something deeply satisfying about a week's holiday in Maine and some hard physical labor, while surrounded by family.

Truly grateful for this gift, and wishing all my readers time with their families over the coming months. Family matters!

This month's website link may strike you as a little unusual. It's actually a piece I originally wrote some 10 years ago to explain some techniques for preventing skin infection in wrestlers. All these years later, it remains one of the top 5 busiest pages on my website.

I take that to mean that there's an ongoing need and demand for this information, and I also know that a number of Newsletter readers are members of the wrestling community. So here it is..., an oldie but a goodie.  Skin Infections: A Tough Opponent for Wrestlers
