Wednesday July 19, 2023 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM

Join the Manitoba Historical Society Tour guides as we examine the physical geography and cultural history of one of Manitoba’s most picturesque areas, which lies at the foot of the Manitoba escarpment.

Leaving Winnipeg at 8 am, Our first stop will be in Portage la Prairie for a coffee break before proceeding to Neepawa.  Here we visit Knox Presbyterian Church (1891) one of the oldest churches in the district, whose congregation reflects the massive social changes that the town has experienced in recent decades.

Our lunch stop will be at the adjacent Brew Brothers Bistro. We'll then board the bus and enjoy a brief driving tour of the town (passing the Margaret Lawrence house) before heading to Polonia.

In Neepawa, Dr. Rod McGinn, Professor Emeritus in the Geography Department of Brandon University, will join us and be our guide to Polonia.  Dr. McGinn will explain the fascinating history behind the physical geography of the area. At Polonia (formerly known as Huns’ Valley) local guides will be on hand to introduce us to the settlement history of the community.  Polonia Church, and the nearby cemetery have arguably the most picturesque settings of any in Manitoba.

Following our visit to Polonia the tour heads back to Neepawa and then our day will conclude with a delicious supper provided in Portage la Prairie for dinner at the Herman Prior Centre.  The tour is scheduled to return to Winnipeg by 8 pm.

The tour fee includes transportation by air-conditioned wash-room equipped motor coach, morning coffee and snack, lunch, dinner, and all fees and taxes.

Our Lead guide will be John "Jock" Lehr, Senior Scholar, and retired University of Winnipeg Professor of Geography, former MHS Executive Board Member, and longstanding MHS member!
