Snapshot

The 8th cohort of Papua New Guinea’s intermediate FETP graduated a few weeks ago. There are now 99 graduates of this program. The intermediate program started in 2013 with the aim of having at least one field epidemiologist in every Province (n=22) and every District (n=89). The Frontline One Health FETP complements the intermediate FETP and includes colleagues from health, environment, agriculture and wildlife. Last month, frontline workshops continued for cohort 3 (Morobe) and 4 (National Capital District). The team continued updating and fine-tuning the curriculum for both the intermediate and frontline programs. We released new resources to support FETPs in PNG, Solomon Islands and further afield. These resources include a new eLearning module on outbreak investigation and a series of  templates for field epidemiologists. We have additional resources coming in the next weeks and months, including case studies, and more eLearning courses. As always, we welcome your feedback.

New Outbreak Investigation eLearning Course

This month, we launched our brand-new, free, eLearning course on "Outbreak Investigation". It is now available on our website. Please share with your FETP colleagues, and share your feedback with us. It has been developed specifically for our Pacific partners, however, it will have relevance for FETP’s operating in resource limited settings around the world. This new course builds on our surveillance, rapid response team, and excel fundamentals e-courses, all available on our website.

Cohort 8 Intermediate FETP Graduation in PNG

Caption: Graduating class of 2023. Well done cohort 8!

The final workshop for the 8th intermediate FETP (iFETP) cohort took place in June, 2023. Of the original 10 fellows, six graduated the program. Two were unfortunately unable to attend due to flight cancellations, and will graduate at a later date, while two fellows did not continue soon after the first workshop due to conflicting work commitments. The success story for this cohort was the delivery of approximately 90% of all classroom teaching by PNG faculty, with positive feedback from fellows’ evaluations. The intention is for all teaching to be done by local faculty in the near future. The majority of mentoring was also undertaken by PNG faculty.

New Resources: Templates for Field Epi’s

FEiA is excited to release a series of free templates for field epidemiologists. Originally designed as a resource for fellows and mentors of field epidemiology training programs in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, we are glad to share these templates with the broader field epidemiology community. There are also worked examples to support fellows when developing reports.

Included in this suite of resources are:

  • An outbreak situation report (sitrep) template

  • An outbreak report template

  • A generic linelist template

  • A weekly surveillance report template

  • An annual surveillance report template

Paper Published

The FEiA and FETPNG teams recently published the findings of a COVID-19 intra action review with graduates of PNG’s advanced FETP. The paper published in WPSAR is entitled “Involvement and readiness of fellows from Papua New Guinea’s Field Epidemiology Training Programme in the COVID-19 response, 2020–2021”.

Theory of Change in FETPs

Having recently conducted a Theory of Change (ToC) workshop in Vanuatu, Rachel Mather (Epidemiologist at FEiA) this month sheds light on what a Theory of Change is and how FEiA use ToC to build a common understanding of the key aims and priorities of the FETP, and the necessary systems and processes for operationalisation, and how all of this must be driven by the context in which it exists.
