Your thoughts invited about a new park

Kia ora.

The Council is establishing a new park in the inner-city.

That's great news because everyone knows we need more green space in the city ... which means this opportunity is a precious one.

But it needs to be more than a patch of grass.

So we wanted to ensure you know that the Council wants your feedback so you can help shape it.

So please do put your thinking caps on and engage your imagination. Here are some ideas to get you going:

perhaps it could include playground equipment and an adventure trail?
maybe it could include a community garden area with fruit trees and herbs ?
perhaps it could it showcase local plants - perhaps flowering plants to add some colour
maybe it could include a beehive?
perhaps it could include a bbq area?
maybe it could incorporate a sensory experience
perhaps it could include a covered area to protect from the weather and be a place for community music and artists to perform or showcase their work
perhaps it has a toolshed for gardening equipment, or for a shared local 'repair cafe' toolset, or play equipment like giant Jenga or chess pieces
maybe it's solar powered to light it, and to provide ways to charge your phones
perhaps it includes a water feature, and/or a sculpture, and/or something that reflects its local history
maybe it has seating which is more interesting than usual park benches
and / or maybe ... ? ... let your imagination fly.

Kia ora,  

We’re creating a new public park in Te Aro, in line with the Council’s Green Network Plan to deliver two new inner-city parks for Wellington, and we want to hear from you.

This new space will be located on the corner of Taranaki Street and Frederick Street and will sit alongside the Chinese Mission Hall and new residential apartment block.

As a key stakeholder in this project, we want to hear about your connection to the area, as well as your needs and wants for the new green space, to help shape the proposed design.

This project aims to establish a new park in Wellington that strengthens community connections and improves the surrounding environment.

Since the site is going to be revamped for community use, we want to make sure we do it right!

We’ve created a quick survey that is only six questions and takes less than five minutes. The survey closes 5pm Sunday 30 July. You can find this survey, along with more information about the project at www.letstalk.wellington.govt.nz/frederick-street-park

Our team will also be holding drop-in sessions where you can learn more about why the project has come about, the project’s priorities and scope, and what the next steps will be.

These sessions will be held at Te Pokapu Hapori Community Centre - 106 Manners Street from 14-19 August. Please visit the LetsTalk page for more information on these sessions.

Our main priorities within the project include;

Partnership with Mana Whenua- Working in meaningful partnership with mana whenua to shape and contribute to project outcomes.
Increase Greening- Align with the Green Network Plan’s key objectives and Our City Tomorrow goals for a greener city.
Increasing accessibility by creating a space that considers and welcomes all users
Water Sensitive Design – Consider opportunities for improving wai ora (water health) and storm water management
Safety- Deliver on Poneke promise objectives to design public spaces that are safe. vibrant, welcoming, and well-maintained.

Drop-in sessions

Come learn about why the project has come about, our project priorities and scope, and what the next steps will be.

Information boards will be available to view and leave your feedback at Te Pokapū Hapori, 105 Manners Street from 14 August.

If you'd like to discuss these boards with the project team, they will be on-site:

14 August 11am-1pm
16 August 5-7pm
17 August 2-4pm
19 August 10am-1pm

If you're unable to attend the drop-in sessions, the contents of the information boards will be included in the documents section of this page from 14 August.
