 Construction Update

Construction continues to progress quickly. The four wings of the building are at various stages of completion, ranging from formwork, rebar, concrete pours, and the radon mitigation system. The walls have started going up on the Northeast wing of the building. The site office lunch shacks are installed on site and hooked up to temporary power.

In the next few weeks, there will continue to be progress on formwork, rebar, and concrete. Additionally, walls will start to go up and the four wings of the building will connect.

Thank you to our neighbors for your patience as we continue to move materials and equipment to site!

 Building with Integrity

Northern Construction is one of the subcontractors hired to work on the Family Preservation Wellness Centre. This company was established in 2017 as a family-owned partnership, it is a 100% Yukon First Nations owned business. Rickey Vance and Jerrid Hozack are citizens of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation and Diane Olsen is a citizen of Na Cho Nyak Dun First Nation.

What started as a team of 9 in 2017 has since grown to a team of 20-25 employees in the operating season. During the winter months a crew of thirteen works on various jobs around the shop/office and snow clearing.

Between the three partners of Northern Construction, there is a combined 60 years of relevant experience that contributes to the success of the business. There is a well-rounded management team, Jerrid is knowledgeable on the business aspects of the company, Rickey has a lot of experience on the mechanical side of the company’s equipment and Diane has experience in the financial/administration for the business.
The company’s main activities include sewer and septic installation, irrigation installation, excavation, forest clearing, and landscaping. Northern Construction has completed several successful jobs with various contractors throughout the Yukon. They have already garnered a great reputation for quality work and professionalism.

Northern Construction said that the key to this company’s rapid success is its management, employees, and their work ethic.

Key values such as respect, reliability and recognition drive their work and all link back to how they felt in previous jobs. While collaborating with several other companies, over the years, they realized that they have the potential to start their own company and that this could be a possibility to make a difference for their family, friends, and community.

Northern Construction values their employees, and they have several different employee appreciation events for them throughout the year. “Keeping our employees happy is #1 for us, we want our workers to be happy.” “We want to acknowledge that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, because we have seen this and went through it ourselves in the past.”

Team members always take pride in being professional on the job. While doing civil works, team members make safety a priority for themselves, other workers, and the public, they also respect the environment.

CYFN is pleased to have Northern Construction involved in the construction of the Family Preservation Wellness Centre.

 Making A Real Impression

On July 25th, 2023, staff from the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) left their handprints in the concrete foundation of the new Family Preservation Wellness Centre—the first infrastructure owned by CYFN. It took a lot of hard work, dedication, and partnerships over the past 3 years to make this building a reality. Setting handprints into the concrete is a symbolic gesture marking this significant milestone in the history of the organization, while also creating a sense of continuity and connection between present and future generations. Looking ahead, this new building is a big step toward strengthening the community. The CYFN team are all very proud of what has been accomplished, and excited to see how this new building will change many lives for the better.

Thank you!
