The Idaho Food Bank Fund Update

Idaho Food Bank Fund – Now Accepting Applications!
The Idaho Food Bank Fund is accepting grant applications through July 31, 2023! If you have not submitted your application, there is still time. Funds can be used to operate programs; purchase food; purchase nutrition education materials; expand capacity (new freezers, shelving, transportation, etc.); or promote access for anyone in need. 501(c)3 hunger relief organizations serving Idahoans are eligible to apply for these grants.

New this year, the Idaho Food Bank Fund is inviting Innovation Proposals for a small number of potentially larger grants. These proposals will feature innovative services that address hunger and food insecurity while also improving overall individual, family, and community well-being.

Grants will be awarded in early October.  To apply, please visit idahofoodbankfund.org or request a paper copy of the grant application by emailing grants@idahofoodbankfund.org

Grant Review Committee
The Idaho Food Bank Fund is in need of two volunteers to join the Grant Review Committee. The Fund is financed by the generosity of the Idaho taxpayers when they donate through a “check off” box on their Idaho State tax returns. Hunger relief organizations across Idaho apply for the funds, and the Grant Review Committee reviews the applications and makes recommendations on who gets funded.

We need a new member from Region 4, which includes Ada, Boise, Elmore, and Valley Counties.

We need a new member from Region 7, which includes Butte, Bingham, Bonneville, Clark, Custer, Fremont, Jefferson, Lemhi, Madison, and Teton Counties.

Serving on the Committee is a volunteer position and involves:

  1.  Reading and scoring 70-80 grant applications (about 2 pages long each) in August and September,

  1. Joining a 2-hour conference call in September where we discuss who should receive funds.

If you have worked in hunger relief, would like to think analytically about where to send hunger relief funds, and live in Regions 4 or 7, please contact:

Partner Highlight
Moscow Food Bank
Moscow Food Bank has been helping their community since 1981 and is 100% volunteered-operated. Throughout the years, the number of people that they serve has continued to increase in number. Since last year, the number of people who visited the food pantry has increased by 39 percent.

Ed and the team at Moscow Foodbank have worked really hard to build an Excel spreadsheet/system to track all the neighbors who come to the pantry.  It has helped their reporting in Agency Express be spot on! They have been in touch with our Nutrition and Partner Specialist in Lewiston on how it can be used.

Not only do they operate their food pantry, but Moscow Food Bank has also been doing food demonstrations in which they are able to educate others about nutrition. They have been collaborating with Eat Smart Idaho to provide these food demos every two months.  They will also be having Community Health entities come and share information during their Pantry distribution days this fall.

Wellness Corner
July is Beef Month in Idaho!
Beef is an excellent source of iron and protein. Iron aids the production of a special protein (hemoglobin) that carries oxygen throughout your body and sufficient iron intake may help offset fatigue. A variety of protein is an important component of a healthy, balanced diet. Thanks to all the contributions made by the beef industry partners in Idaho, we have been able to serve beef to our partners and neighbors.

Try this Beef-Stuffed Pepper recipe from Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. You can view all the details for this recipe using this link.

Happy to help.
