Dear Friends,
It is good to be back in the life of the District following my sabbatical. There is much to share from that, and I hope I will have opportunity to do so. I wanted to take time at this moment to thank colleagues who have cared for the District and supported work across the District in my absence.
I am indebted to Melvyn Kelly, as Deputy Chair, for all he did to respond to pastoral needs and watch over the life of the District while I was enjoying my sabbatical. As he was preparing to sit down from ministry, he donated his years of wisdom, goodness, and care to you all. I could not have hoped to have a better person beside me as Deputy Chair, and I am grateful for his ongoing presence in the District as he sits down in Horsforth.
I want to celebrate the gifts of Wendy, as my PA, and Lesley, in the office, as they made sure that everything ran as smoothly as ever, responding to queries, managing processes, and keeping the District well managed and efficient. They were supported by Caroline Stead, as Synod Secretary, by Chris Hawke, who had convened my sabbatical support group, and Alan Wittrick, our Treasurer, who does so much that is unseen.
I am also grateful to David Goodall and to Melanie, who have ensured that work was done to recruit a new member to the District Team and that new roles were enabled in the circuits, supported by the District. David has also ensured that some aspects of the District Strategy have continued to be developed in my absence.
They have at the same time been supported by others in the District covering all aspects of property, grants, safeguarding and youth work, and the District is better for the richness of our teams.
Finally, but in no way less significantly, I also want to thank ministers and stewards who have worked together to ensure we serve God with joyfulness and faithfulness across the churches, circuits, and District. You are an amazing group of people, and it is a privilege to serve you. I genuinely missed you, and I am glad to again be among you.
When I went on sabbatical, I never worried that you might not manage without me. I knew you would all not only be fine, but would flourish because of who you are and the God we love. I was worried you might wonder what the point of a Chair was and think you might not need me!
Being on sabbatical is a reminder that we are more than person. We are a wonderful gathering of people, united in Christ, and blessed by the Spirit. God is with us and equipping us, and it is a pleasure to enjoy that truth with you.
God bless you,
Kerry
