The 2023 TD Markham Jazz Festival Has Something for Everyone!

No matter your musical taste, we have a style that we know you’ll love. Join us in historic Main Street Unionville August 18-20 and pick your favourites amongst our stellar group of performers.

JUNO-winning Artistic Director Ernesto Cervini has programmed a 2023 lineup that is sure to put a smile on your face. Whether it be big band jazz, crooners, divas, modern jazz, blues, salsa, Afro-Cuban, soul, R&B, we’ve got it and more.

Ernesto is no stranger to the Canadian music scene. Long-time musician, composer, bandleader and recording artist, he is an award-winning drummer. He has taught music at the University of Toronto and Humber College.

Bringing his talents and knowledge to the TD Markham Jazz Festival, Ernesto says, “the TD Markham Jazz festival has always punched above its weight.” His goal is to continue to bring exciting, world-class talent to the festival.

There are 25 different shows on tap, beginning Friday evening August 18th at 7:30pm with Grammy-winning Canadian jazz guitarist Matt Stevens, followed at 9:30pm by internationally recognized, Grammy-winning vocal sensation Catherine Russell.

Over the full weekend, beginning at noon Saturday and Sunday, you can catch legendary saxophonist and JUNO-winner Mike Murley and his quartet; JUNO-winners Okan’s Afro-Cuban stylings; Avataar’s blend of jazz/world/funk/pop styles; Bantu Salsa’s blend of Africa and Mexico; Barbra Lica’s crystalline vocals; Chris Antonik’s blues servings; violinist/composer Aline Homzy’s etoile magique originality; island rhythms and Caribbean cool with saxophonist Elan Trotman; swing with the beat of the Fabulous Jive Bombers; Brian Barlow Big Band and Laila Biali honouring the music of Joni Mitchell; the Nimmons Tribute Band honouring Canadian jazz icon Phil Nimmons; plus many, many more exciting performances.

According to Ernesto, the festival “is programmed in such a way that shows are spread out time-wise, meaning that a half hour after one is underway, another begins at the other main stage. The garden stage, for its part, presents the music in a more intimate setting.”

Join us and enjoy these extraordinary musical events. All performances are FREE and take place in and around the Main Street of Markham’s historic downtown Unionville area.

The TD Markham Jazz Festival is a not-for-profit organization with a mandate to enrich cultural life in the region by bringing emerging and established jazz artists to Markham for all to enjoy. Established in 1998, the festival draws more than 25,000 residents and visitors to the streets of Unionville during the third weekend in August. Local and international artists deliver over 30 open-air performances during the weekend as well as in selected “hot spots” and at a ticketed opening-night concert. During the year, the festival hosts “Hot Spot Concerts” at selected venues in Markham. TD Canada Trust became its title sponsor in 2014.
