Welcome to Headlines, the termly newsletter from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (North East LEP) developed for Secondary Head Teachers and Principals.

Headlines is offered as part of the North East LEP’s North East Ambition programme, which aims to raise the career aspirations of each and every young person in the North East, and to help them reach their full potential. We do this by supporting schools to meet their statutory duties for careers education and guidance, and to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks.
Education Select Committee publishes CEIAG report

The Education Select Committee has published the results of its inquiry into the effectiveness of the current system for careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG).

The report concluded that the right framework is broadly in place but there is a need for new Careers Strategy which includes clear, measurable outcomes, including targets to increase the number of schools achieving the Gatsby benchmarks in full.

Recent research and reports
  • Tackling youth unemployment
A new All-Parliamentary Group for Youth Unemployment report has been published. The report found many communities and young people are still being underserved and locked out of opportunity. A place-based approach to meeting the needs of young people was identified as an effective method to tackle the youth unemployment challenge.

  • Building the skills of the future
The apprenticeships and technical education charity WorldSkills UK has published its Manufacturing Excellence report, which explores how young people can acquire the world-class skills the UK needs to become a global leader in advanced manufacturing.

  • WorldSkills UK has also released an Exploring the Skills Economy report. This paper is a case study of how WorldSkills UK is working with its partners nationally and internationally to unleash the potential of a skills economy to help power up UK competitiveness and productivity by harnessing the world-class talent of the next generation.

  • Unleashing the potential of apprenticeships
Creating more high-quality apprenticeships across the UK could help tackle skills shortages, according to a new UCAS and Sutton Trust report. The report - Where Next: What Influences the Choices of Would-be Apprentices? - reveals the choices and barriers students face on the journey to an apprenticeship. It also highlights areas of opportunity to increase the supply of apprenticeships and help more students, particularly those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, access this pathway.

We understand the huge challenges that all Head Teachers and Principals face, and the competing priorities you deal with daily. This section presents the experiences of a local head teacher or principal, providing an insight into what is happening in their school and why, and the impact it is having.

In this edition, we meet Mrs Joanna Lamb, Headteacher at Bedlington Academy in Northumberland, who explains how the school works at a MAT level to support their careers programme, as well how they have embedded careers education and guidance within the school and the impact it is having on their students.

A focus on...encounters with further and higher education

We know that it is important that young people (and their parents or carers) have access to information, advice and guidance to help them as they plan for the key transition points within their education, to help them make an informed decision and the next best step – whether, for a year 11, that is progressing onto A levels, starting a T level (or an alternative vocational option) or securing an apprenticeship.

That is why Benchmark 7 states that “All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.”

It is also the purpose behind the government’s Provider Access Legislation (PAL), which was updated in January, and requires all maintained schools and academies to publish a policy statement setting out opportunities for providers of technical education and apprenticeships to access year 8-13 pupils, and to make sure the statement is followed.

Resources:

At the North East LEP, through our North East Ambition programme, we have a range of resources that can support every school to meet their PAL requirements and support their students make an informed decision that will enable them to make successful, and sustained, destination – whether after year 11 or year 13. You can access our Benchmark seven toolkit and resources here.

For example, we have a short animation suitable for year 11 and year 13 students and their parents or carers, that explains each of the options open to them, and where they can find out more. We also have a SEND version of this resource.

If you are struggling to find the details of providers to invite into school or want to be able to share details of providers with your students or their parents/carers, you can use our new Provider Portal that allows you to search a list of regional providers based on type of provision, occupational interest or location.

Need support?

Finally, as a North East Ambition team, we have links with each of the local FE colleges, independent training providers and universities and are happy to contact them on your behalf or share their details with yourself or colleagues within the school, including your Careers Leader. For any support on further or higher education, please email GoodCareers@nelep.co.uk and we’ll get back to you.
