Community BBQ July 28

Mark your calendars for the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc Community BBQ on July 28th at Tyee Park from 10AM to 3PM!

Join us for a day filled with fun activities for all ages! Jump around in the bouncy castles, test your aim at the dunk tank, and challenge your friends and family to some thrilling yard games. We have a special guest, Uncle Chris the Clown, who will be spreading joy and laughter throughout the event! Of course, Don't forget about the door prizes! Make sure to participate for a chance to win some amazing goodies.

Bring your friends, family, and appetite for delicious food, as we celebrate our vibrant community together. Let's make this BBQ an unforgettable day of laughter, games, and connections!

Membership Code Update

We are happy to report that after delays due to COVID, the membership code process is now moving forward! Grassroots family representatives have been selected and Membership Code training is tentatively scheduled for September 2023. Once training is complete, we will be able to begin processing affiliates applications. We expect processing to start in the fall of this year and applications will be processed based on the date they were received. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Powwow Volunteers!

The 42nd Annual Kamloopa Powwow is only a few days away... and we need VOLUNTEERS! We have openings for: Concession, Janitorial, Gates/Parking, Maintenance, Security (Mandatory criminal record check for last 12 months). Ages 15 and up. The honourarium has been raised to $17.50/hour. Email powwow@kib.ca or call Harmony Firingstoney, Powwow Coordinator at (250) 828-9782.

Job Fairs

Our new grocery store is on track for a Fall 2023 opening! Mark your calendars for our two upcoming job fairs. Thursday, September 14, 2pm - 7pm at MSG and Saturday, September 16, 11 to 3pm at Coast Hotel, Kamloops. Details in the poster below.

Commercial Complex Project

Great news! Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc received a $3 million grant from Indigenous Services Canada through the Community Opportunity Readiness Fund – Priorities Framework for the Commercial Complex Project. This project was one of only a handful of economic development infrastructure projects approved from a sea of national applications.

BC Hydro Meeting

Tkwenem7íple7 Thomas and Tkwenem7íple7 Dave met with representatives from BC Hydro to begin discussing and formalizing our relationship.

BC Hydro Try-A-Trade

Interested in trying a career with BC Hydro? BC Hydro’s Try-A-Trade program offers the chance to try two different BC Hydro trades through a 12 to 16-week paid work experience program, with placements beginning October 2023. Training includes classroom learning and job shadow placements with BC Hydro crews and professionals in various locations across the province. Apply by August 5!

Fire Prohibition

Effective at 12 p.m. (noon) on Friday, July 7, 2023, Category 1 campfires are prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. This campfire prohibition will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 13, 2023, or until the orders are rescinded.

BCAFN Elections

The BCAFN elections scheduled for September 20, 2023, will be conducted through electronic voting. The BCAFN is calling for nominations for various positions, including Regional Chief, three (3) seats on the BCAFN Board of Directors, one (1) Female Youth Representative, and one (1) Male Youth Representative. The deadline for nominations is August 6, 2023. Detailed information on the nomination process, acceptance forms, and the election's policies, procedures, and guidelines can be found in the BCAFN Governance Manual, which is available upon request. Where The Rivers Meet is the Community Newsletter provided by Tk̓emlúps Indigenous Policing which services the Indigenous communities of Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, Skeetchestn Indian Band and Whispering Pines/Clinton Indian Band. Health Care Training

With funding provided by the Government of Canada through the Canada-British Columbia Workforce Development Agreement, BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) will be training health care assistants in the Kamloops regions. Students enrolled in the program will receive skills training by way of the provincially approved curriculum for health care assistants, delivered in partnership with Stenberg College.

Bishop Joseph Nguyen is holding Sunday mass services on August 6 at 1pm. We can't wait to come together again and worship in-person. See you all there!

Halston Bridge Construction

NOTICE: There is an upcoming rehabilitation project on the Halston Bridge, which is a vital route for our community.

  • Westbound lanes construction: July 17, 2023 to November 2023.
  • Eastbound lanes construction: February 2024 to May 2024.

Regular work hours are scheduled from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Sunday. Occasional night work will be necessary to meet concrete placement temperature requirements. During this period, please expect some noise from construction equipment, including jackhammers. We anticipate the noise levels to be less noticeable as we progress eastward.
