2) Pandemic Food Relief Effort, supported by the City of Minneapolis


Hot Asian meals pick up at Asian Media Access' office for Minneapolis families in need. Started in June 2023 and is on-going. Must be a Minneapolis resident to qualify.

Pick up on Wednesdays only from 5:00pm - 6:00pm. Limited to 13 families each week with 3 meal boxes per family, regardless of family size. Each family is supported for weekly pick-up for up to 4 weeks.

Program Updates

Inter-generational Community Engagement Project through Multimedia Arts

 
Asian Media Access has designed a new multimedia arts project to target members not knowing much about Asian immigrants/refugees experience, as well as documenting the Anti-Asian Hate incidents for the future generation to remember this historical moment of dual pandemic for Asian Americans – COVID-19 and Anti-Asian Hate acts.  Our project’s artistic goal is to develop a platform through multimedia arts to engage Asian Americans, showcasing their rich cultural traditions and struggles cross generations.

In response to concerns of displacement around the planned Blue Line Extension, Hennepin County and the Metropolitan Council launched a first-of-its-kind community oriented anti-displacement initiative.

To lead the initial phases of this work, Hennepin County contracted with the University of Minnesota's Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) to convene an Anti-Displacement Work Group that centered community voices and brought together diverse stakeholders to study and recommend anti-displacement strategies to help ensure the value of light rail will benefit current corridor residents, and minimize physical, cultural, and economic displacement.

Upcoming Fall 2023 Youth Discussion


Since 2020, Asian Media Access has hosted multiple youth discussions for ages 15-25. These virtual discussions cover various topics such as gambling prevention, career journey, social media management, mindfulness, and more! An expert guest speaker is invited to present the topic and youth are encouraged to participate in sharing their reflection, thoughts, and personal experiences. At the end of each session, a quiz game, Kahoot, is played to help the youth retain the main points of the topic. 

AMA plans to continue to support these youth discussions coming Fall of 2023, specifically surrounding the topic of Anti-Racism. This topic will include Anti-Asian hate, mental health, wellness, bicultural healthy living, and more.

What are Peer Support Circles?
These are clinician-led small discussion groups, which research shows can increase quality of life by reducing feelings stress and burnout. This recurring group is well-suited for individuals of Asian descent who are looking to connect with peers to discuss culturally-specific topics, and who are interested in experiencing Anise's tailored approach to mental health care in a light-touch setting.

Liu Ming Yuan, the Garden of Whispering Willows & Flowing Waters at Lake Phalen is starting on its exciting Phase II, and the Minnesota China Friendship Garden Society has expanded decision making power, increasing the board from 13 to 15 members. In a unanimous action, it disbanded the Hmong and Chinese Advisory Committees, inviting the entire community and former Advisory Committee members to apply for board or volunteer action committee membership: Outreach, Fundraising, Membership, Construction, Poetic Inspiration, Finance. All former Advisory Committee members will be recognized in writing for their service and encouraged to participate in the Garden Society however they wish.

Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis grows from The Transition Stage (2021), a temporary community cocoon installation, which served as a vessel for community laments, hopes, dreams, and mottos of strength as the Longfellow neighborhood and the city of Minneapolis moved towards growth, redevelopment and healing after the 2020 murder of George Floyd and subsequent uprisings that caused destruction and devastation to the Longfellow neighborhood.

Minnesota Festival Dance Competition

We are calling all dance teams to join us on our first dance competition for the Asian Street Food Night Market
Each Group shall be composed of a minimum of 5 dancers up to maximum of 20 dancers. Members of the group may be composed to all males and females, or a combination. The music must be at least 3 minutes but not more than seven minutes.

Rules: We had a lot of concerns about how big the stage would be (28th wide by 24 ft deep) . This is a lot bigger than last time.

Han characters are still used today in many Asian languages. Han characters not only play a key role in Chinese culture, but are also a valuable element in understanding the centuries-long transformation of their shape, the beauty of Chinese calligraphy, and the wisdom behind the creation of each character. This year, the Han Character Festival will be held in a park outdoors with a carnival style. Many booths with fun activities in store will be set up.
