TD Markham Jazz Festival Celebrates Two Legendary Canadian Music Icons at our Festival in August!

The TD Markham Jazz festival is thrilled to present two spectacular tributes to two Canadian music legends - jazz pioneer Phil Nimmons and iconic folk/rock/jazz performer Joni Mitchell.

Biali and Barlow Play Joni Mitchell – Saturday, August 19

On Saturday, August 19th at 7:00pm, at the Millennium Bandstand, you’ll be treated to a special musical event. JUNO and multi-award winning Canadian singer-songwriter, pianist and CBC Music radio host Laila Biali will be joined by the Brian Barlow Big Band in a musical tribute to Joni Mitchell’s amazing songbook.
Laila Biali has headlined festivals and venues spanning five continents, from New York City’s Carnegie Hall, to Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts.
Brian Barlow is one of Canada’s most recorded drummer/percussionists, having performed on over 500 albums over a career spanning almost 50 years.
For the past twenty years, the Brian Barlow Big Band, made up of the A-list of Canadian jazz ensemble musicians, has set the gold standard for big bands in Canada.
Put them together, along with the music of Joni Mitchell and original arrangements by Brian Barlow, and you’ve got a magic mix.

Nimmons Tribute Band – Sunday, August 20

Closing out the 26th TD Markham Jazz Festival on Sunday, August 20th at 5:00pm, at the Millennium Bandstand, the Nimmons Tribute Band will honour Canadian jazz legend Phil Nimmons. Nimmons celebrated his 100th birthday on June 3rd of this year! Virtuoso clarinetist, arranger, composer and educator, Nimmons helped lay the foundations of a full-fledged jazz program at the University of Toronto, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1994. He was also a long-time friend and collaborator with piano legend Oscar Peterson.

The Nimmons Tribute Band features some of Canada’s finest musicians, including many JUNO winners, who join in a joyous celebratory performance. Led by grandson Sean Nimmons-Paterson, the band includes Phil’s colleagues, former students, friends and family - Kevin Turcotte, Tara Davidson, Mike Murley, William Carn, Alex Dean, Heather Bambrick, Jon Maharaj and Ethan Ardelli. Each has joined because of their deep appreciation for the contribution Phil has made to their careers and to jazz in Canada.

“He’s such a great teacher - so inspiring, so sensitive to his students, very observant and supportive.”

Artistic Director, TD Markham Jazz Festival
