Upcoming 21st CCLC Town Hall
 
ACT Now will be hosting a Town Hall meeting for all 21st Century Community Learning Centers providers on July 27, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The meeting will cover updates to grantees regarding programming, funding, upcoming deadlines, and advocacy strategies. Additionally, ACT Now will share resources to support grantees in their programmatic and sustainability efforts. Attendees will also have an opportunity to share concerns, questions, or feedback on their programmatic experience with their peers and ACT Now.

Please note that Town Hall meetings will occur on a bi-monthly basis.

ACT Now is very excited to take a moment to review our role as your RPSA Training, Technical Assistance, and Support (TTAS) Provider.  In this role, we offer support in various areas including grant compliance, networking opportunities, and training and professional development. House Appropriators Mark-up FY 2024 Education Spending Bill

On July 14, 2023, the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education (LHHS-ED) and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee marked up its FY 2024 spending bill. Overall, the FY 2024 Labor-HHS-Education bill provides $140 billion for the agencies and programs in the expansive bill which is a cut of $60 billion from 2023 levels. The House and Senate will have to negotiate a final spending bill. The Afterschool Alliance has a blog on the implications this has for the afterschool field and education sector in general.

How Municipalities Can Support Summer Learning Programs

The National League of Cities (NLC) is producing a series of blogs highlighting the power of summer learning programs and the role cities play in supporting these programs’ growth and continuation.

A new brief from the Afterschool Alliance finds that there were positive learning impacts among students participating in afterschool and summer programs during the pandemic. The brief also provides background on the supports provided by 21st CCLC programs and how students benefit from participation in the program.
 
Programs Open This Summer Will Reach the Highest Levels in Three Years

Survey data from an Afterschool Alliance survey found that this summer, program providers are much more certain about being open; however, students’ mental health and well-being and the ability to hire enough staff remain as coconcerns for many providers. Astronauts Answer Student's Questions!

NASA is hosting a virtual event where students will be asking astronauts questions about living and working on the International Space Station. Youth Podcasting Project

Strengthening Chicago's Youth is developing a project to support the production and broadcasting of two new podcast episodes about addressing violence and healing in communities through youth and community stories of resilience. Eligible participants must be ages 16 to 20.

Governor Pritzker Announces $10 Million for Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program

Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) launched $10 million in funding for the third round of the Illinois Works PreApprenticeship Program. The Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program provides training opportunities, expands the talent pipeline, and boosts diversity in the construction industry and building trades. Grantees will be selected through a competitive Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) process. Eligible applicants include non-profit, community-based organizations, such as industry associations, chambers of commerce, local workforce areas, community colleges, technical schools, and school districts. Applications will be accepted until August 30, 2023.

Noyce Scholars at Elmhurst University 

The School of Education at Elhust Univeristy is recruiting 24 Noyce Scholars who would like to pursue STEM degrees with teacher licensure in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and physics. Selected applicants will be awarded a scholarship. Contact Professor Theresa Robinson at theresa.robinson@elmhurst.edu with inquiries.

CTE Funding Update

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has begun developing a new funding formula for CTE. CTE has two major funding streams – federal Perkins funding and state funding. The proposal ISBE is considering would only phase in a new calculation for Area Career Centers and state “formula funds,” beginning in 2025. You can view all the details in a State CTE Funding Formula Update presentation and video and send your questions and feedback to CTE@isbe.net.
