Has 'Discipline' Become a Dirty Word?

Dear Reader,

When we were growing up, many, many moons ago, we got instilled with discipline in our homes, at school, everywhere we went. We knew what the results were if we didn't show up on time. We had to practice regularly for us to get a medal or be recognized.

There was only a first and a second and a third prize. There were no participation medals, so the discipline was needed to be successful.

My heart goes out to the young people of today who grew up with participation medals, and maybe not as much discipline and as much structure in their lives as we grew up with. And I'm wondering if this is serving the community, if this is serving our lives and our quest for having better quality of life?

Because we've seen that sometimes today, people apply for jobs and they don't even show up for interviews. Or they show up for the interview, get the job and then start ghosting the company. They don't even show up when they're supposed to start working. I think this has all got something to do with discipline.

My message to everyone is that there are lots of advantages to leading a disciplined life. To summarize it, I thought of four different things that I've seen in my life that really come from discipline.

The first thing is growth. If you have discipline and good habits, you're constantly on a growth path, you're constantly improving - you're constantly trying to be better. And so you grow and in that growth process, you find a lot of joy. They always say the joy is in the process, in the journey. It's not in the destination. So that's the first thing. Growth will follow you when you start being more disciplined and have great habits.

The second thing is, the moment you're disciplined and you have all of these things in place, your confidence will go up. You'll show up better. You'll be more competitive. You'll be more of a nice person to be with because you are now radiating confidence and the joy follows. So that's the second thing, you're prepared so it's easier to be confident and to take your space.

The third thing is that results follow. If you have good habits, if you have good discipline, you'll repeatedly work at something and you'll gradually get better and better and then the results will follow. Sometimes you may win a big prize or maybe not or maybe you're just better at what you're doing and you're helping more people and you're growing in a certain direction. But those results are the result of having good discipline.

And then the big one, number four is trust. When you have good discipline, you'll show up for your appointments, you'll be there on time. You'll do what you promise and the trust will grow. People will trust you. They will not only know that you'll show up, they'll also entrust you with what's important to them and their lives. It may be a project, it may be another person, it may be something to work with, but they'll trust you with those sensitive areas of their life. And you know, the biggest joy comes when we start helping other people. But we can only help other people if they trust us to help them.

So there you have it: four distinct advantages of having good discipline in your life.

I encourage all of us, young and old, how we grew up or whatever happened in our childhood, or how we were taught to participate, or compete or whatever. Let's just work on these things, these four things to help us grow discipline in our lives and the joy will follow.
