VIRGINIA PARALLEL THIMBLE SHOAL TUNNEL PROJECT

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel is being constructed alongside the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which spans the lower Chesapeake Bay, connecting Virginia’s Eastern Shore with the mainland in Virginia Beach.

ATI used hydrodemolition to remove a section of the new Parallel Thimble Tunnel structure. They hydroblasted away an area 300 feet long, 6 feet high, and 6 inches deep. This was done to create space for a new 6-foot-thick concrete slab that would be poured and connected to the existing rebar reinforcement.

During the project's development, engineers anticipated a potential challenge: When the Tunnel Boring Machine would come through the opposite end of the tunnel, the steel rebar within the walls that were poured previously would interfere with the boring process. To overcome this, they engineered fiberglass rebar that was designed to be cut as the drill penetrated through it, while maintaining the structural integrity of the concrete.

ATI successfully handled this challenge by carefully adjusting the pressure of the high-speed water jet used in the hydrodemolition process. This adjustment was crucial to prevent damage to the existing fiberglass rebar, which has different characteristics than traditional steel or ceramic rebar.
