Hi Dear Ones,

Recently, we've been hearing and reading more about "functional" yoga. It’s a term that’s being used to describe more adaptable ways of teaching and practicing. Instead of creating goals around accomplishing poses, the idea is that we use asanas as a way to support movement in our daily lives.

“Functional yoga” is an offshoot of the functional movement trend in the fitness industry. So instead of focusing on trying to do the pose "the right way," we focus on how our bodies feel with the movement and how the movement supports our needs. This respects each person’s body type and lifestyle.

This, in turn, is meant to help us develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, mobility, and stability. Functional yoga focuses on practical daily living movements like squatting, lunging, twisting, reaching, and bending. And all this is great – because asanas should be functional. We’re big fans of function and practicality.

When our yoga practice is taught in an intentional way – we are comfortable and confident in what we are doing with our bodies…maybe a little amused too 😉. We sense the poses have a purpose and are sequenced in a mindful, logical order to support our overall wellbeing.

This “new” discovery in the yoga exercise world is a welcome change. Enough harm has been done physically and mentally by the western yoga mastery approach.

Cristal and I are blessed to have been part of the "oddball teachers" out there for years, teaching functional yoga instead of “this is what you need to do” or “the way you should look” yoga. We are professionals who care and regularly invest effort, time, and money into our studies, practice, and lesson planning. We focus on cuing to maximize folks' safety and benefits.

We’re over the top that gentle, mindful, and accessible functional yoga is becoming recognized by the fitness and medical communities as an important distinction from the mainstream yoga that many folks have tried and then decided they can’t do.

We welcome you to a meaningful style of yoga at Bloom Yoga & Wellness where you will be able to practice yoga in a way that supports your overall health and wellbeing while having Fun 🤩.

With Warm Smiles,

Sharon and Cristal
