An Integrated Mobility Ecosystem

For the Mobility Authority, safety isn’t just a priority, it’s a core value. It is fundamental to who we are and how we operate. And at the heart of our network is our Traffic Incident & Management (TIM) Center which affords us the ability to monitor our facilities and coordinate resources for incident management and maintenance.

33 high-definition cameras, sensors, and other technologies allow for a continuous live-feed of our network. A vehicle detector data feed provides real-time traffic information in addition to operators monitoring and coordinating resources both internally and with other agencies. It’s an integrated mobility ecosystem designed to improve roadway safety and allow us to respond efficiently to accidents and other interruptions to traffic flow.

Technological Advancements
We pride ourselves on being early adopters of emerging transportation technologies. In 2019, we were the first in the region to implement wrong-way driving technology which can alert drivers with connected vehicle capabilities and our TIM Center operators to incidents.

Between 2020 and 2021, an advanced transportation and incident management/prediction system was installed across all our facilities. The system uses data to predict congestion, identify where crashes are likely, and alert personnel to events. And this year, the Mobility Authority has entered a partnership with City of Cedar Park law enforcement to utilize drone and real-time kinematics technology to reduce the duration of crash investigations and to provide the Mobility Authority real time information affecting traffic flows and aerial video records. A similar partnership effort started in 2021 with the City of Leander has cut down the total time of crash investigations by roughly 50 percent, reducing road closure times and allowing for more efficient use of police resources.

We also regularly gather and analyze data from these tech resources to identify potential areas of concern and make improvements. It’s this information which helped inform a safety project completed last fall where we installed median cable barrier along 183A in locations with a high incident rate of cross overs.

Agency Coordination
Operation of the TIM Center requires active and ongoing coordination between regional agencies. We work closely with the Texas Department of Transportation’s ITS operations team and HERO program, as well as local municipalities and law enforcement for everything from signal timing and outages to major roadway incidents. And in 2020, we migrated our TIM Center platform to match that used by TxDOT’s Austin District, allowing for better regional sharing of data and real-time information.

Internally, our operators and maintenance contractor communicate to respond to debris pick-up and delineator replacements, as well as provide traffic control when needed.

It takes a planned and coordinated multi-disciplinary process to detect, respond to, and clear traffic incidents so that emergency services can respond expeditiously, and traffic flow may be restored as safely and quickly as possible.

Public Notice
A final, critical element to our operation – keeping you informed. Operators post traffic-related updates for all Mobility Authority roadways to Twitter, @RMATIMCenter. Before hitting the road, folks can plan their commute accordingly based on real-time updates.

Our TIM Center is also part of the Waze Connected Citizens Program, a knowledge-sharing platform that allows us to receive alerts and feed information into the navigational apps you use regularly.

Thank you to our TIM Center operators, regional partners, and local emergency services in helping keep our roadways safe.

Do Your Part

This week marks over 6 weeks of record heat - and the consequences have been severe with over 2500 acres burned in Central Texas this year. Do your part and don't let a wildfire start.

A Faster, Simpler Way to Pay

The Mobility Authority recently added a faster, simpler way to pay. Customers can scan a QR Code on the front of their Pay By Mail invoice. From there, they are taken to a personalized secure payment portal. They simply enter their information to pay their bill.

You also have the option to enroll in text reminders so you’ll always know when an upcoming payment is due and never pay a late fee again.*

This new payment method is in addition to our existing phone, online, in-person, and mail-in options. For more information, check out this step-by-step video:

*SMS messaging will remind you there is an upcoming payment due. If you don't pay by the due date, late fees still apply.

On the Road Again

Don’t get us wrong, everything we need is right here in Central Texas. But sometimes the urge strikes for an old-fashioned road trip. And as transportation professionals, we believe good car tunes also fall under our expertise.

If you plan on hitting the road before the summer’s end, we’ve compiled a short list of our best road trip songs to get your motors running. Listen along here.
