An Introduction to Reading the Tonalamatl, the Book of Days
Saturday, September 16, 10:00 am-4:00 pm PST
Join us for a day focusing on our Two-Spirit artistry and creativity with Mi Corazon Mexica. This September’s community artist workshop will explore the Tonalamatl, used throughout Mesoamerica as a means of understanding the cosmos and revealing the place of humanity in creation. It guided our ancestors towards wisdom, and connected them to the natural world, the Teteo or “Gods,” and to their own ancestors. The Spanish burned the ancient books, and with them burnt a part of our heritage. This course aims to give the participant an introductory overview of the nature of time and the calendar, and its connection to spirituality and the way we live our daily lives. We will learn to do a basic reading, which is to say, to reveal the Tonalli, the destiny and sacred name of a person, based on the day of their birth, and we will write with Central Mexican glyphs our Tonalli on a sheet of amate paper. The course includes a copy of the Tonalamatl, a guide to help with date correlation, and the materials to paint the Tonalli.
