Volunteers Needed: CARL 2024 Conference Planning Committee
The biannual CARL conference is a well-loved and well-attended CARL sponsored event. Now is your chance to shape the future of librarianship in California by serving on the 2024 Conference Planning Committee!

Several people have already stepped up, but 2-4 more volunteers are needed to seat the CARL 2024 Conference Planning Committee. This team leads conference planning, including developing the theme, budget, timeline, keynote selection, call for proposals and more. Conference planning will take place between April 2023-April 2024 and includes approximately 6-8 hours per week. On-boarding with previous conference planners will take place during April-May 2023.

Please submit a short statement of interest, including event planning experience, and other relevant skills to Shamika Simpson (ssimpson@lbcc.edu).

Recruiting for Social Media Content Contributors

CARL is seeking 2-3 CARL members to volunteer as Social Media Content Contributors to help us revitalize and expand our social media presence. Contributors will work collaboratively with CARL’s new Communications Officer (one of the elected Directors-at-Large) to propose campaign ideas, design, edit, and mediate engaging posts. Volunteers who will excel in this role will be creative, innovative, detail oriented, and passionate about creating compelling social media content. Time commitments will vary, but we expect it to be around 4-5 hours/month. Contributors will serve two year terms with the opportunity to extend.

The desired qualifications are:

  • Social media savvy
  • Basic understanding of social media algorithms
  • An eye for good design
  • Comfortable using design platforms, such as Canva
If you are interested, kindly email Beth Namei at Beth.Namei@claremont.edu and Shamika Simpson at ssimpson@lbcc.edu.

Interest Groups
CARLDIG-S (CARL Discussion Interest Group - South)

Image of a group of prairie dogs on a tan background. Text reads: Save the Date: Assessment: What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. CARLDIG-S Fall Program; December 1, 2023; Cal Poly PomonaSave the Date! CARLDIG-S Fall Program 2023 - Assessment: What is it good for? (Absolutely nothing?)

When: Friday, December 1st (half day)
Where: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

After 3 years of virtual programming, we’re coming back in-person and offering our first half day hybrid program hosted by Cal Poly Pomona.

Are you reviewing data from your various reference services? Using that information to inform decisions or changes for your department and/or users? Sounds like you’re doing assessment and we want to hear about it! Whether you, your colleagues, supervisors, or administrators encourage assessment and want to encourage data-driven change (or if they don’t) - we are calling you to share the amazing work you’re doing so we can learn from each other!

Many of us may feel as though we’re mining and creating data for no one, or that the information we’re providing doesn’t impact anyone. Let us tell you, it does! Everyone has a gift to share so please consider sharing it at the 2023 Fall Program in Pomona, California! Keep an eye out for our Call for Proposals in late Summer.

Estimated costs for our in-person program will be $40 - $70 (depending on membership) and will include beverages, light breakfast, afternoon snacks, and discussion. We plan to offer a lower cost option so those who cannot attend in-person may participate via Zoom webinar for our presentations and lightning rounds (cost TBD). We hope to see you December 1st!

Officer Nominations

Our CARLDIG-S leadership team is seeking volunteers to join our leadership team! This opportunity is a great way to network with other professionals in Southern California, advance critical conversations in the field of reference, and boost the professional service section of your resume. We need you to help us continue this work in providing a place for reference in CARL! CARLDIG-S meets at least once a quarter for 2 hours via Zoom to discuss/attend social opportunities, open discussion on reference at our various institutions, and plan our annual program. Please consider standing for the position of:

  • Vice -Chair/Chair-Elect: Two year commitment. Min. 4 meetings 2-hours each; shadows Chair and fills in as necessary before designated time as Chair (4+ hours/month)

  • Secretary: min. 4 meetings 2-hours each; take minutes (2+ hours/month)

  • Programs Chair: min. 4 meetings 2-hours each; Hosts in-person programming and organizes on-site logistics (2+ hours/month)

  • Webmaster: attends meetings as available; update CARL webpage as needed (2 hours/year)

  • Publicity Officer: attends meetings as available; post messaging to listservs, social media, and CARLDIG-S LibGuide (2 hours/year)

*Full position descriptions and duties are in the CARLDIG-S bylaws: https://carldigs.libguides.com/ld.php?content_id=68965587

A candidacy form for nominations will be shared mid-summer with elections in October 2023.

All current CARLDIG-S members are eligible to stand for office and to vote. Not a member of CARLDIG-S but a current CARL member? Join CARLDIG-S for free by updating your Membership in WildApricot!

Thank you so much for your consideration, as we look forward to continuing the work of CARLDIG-S for the California academic library community and beyond!

Summer Panel for Graduate Students

We're looking to host a virtual discussion panel for library students across southern California in late July. This would be an hour-long commitment where we hope to share our experiences as librarians working in southern California and to promote CARL and CARLDIG-South.

Please keep an eye on the listserv for our announcement and share with any LIS students you know who might be interested in attending.

Next CARLDIG-S Meeting

Friday, September 1st (10am - 12pm) on Zoom
10am - 11am Steering Committee Business
11am - 12pm Open Discussion for all members (CARLDIG-s, CARL, and guests)

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Nicole Crawford
Headshot of Nicole CrawfordHello! My name is Nicole Crawford, and I am happy to be of assistance as the CARL Equity and Inclusion Coordinator. I have my MA in English Literature and my MLIS is from San Jose State, where I focused on both academic and public services. I am a librarian, but also a forever academic at heart with a focus on the characteristics that are “othered” due to their societal differences. I have seven years of management experience and extensive DEI training due to that experience. I am passionate about being the Equity and Inclusion Coordinator because I believe that everyone has the right to feel valued, supported, and included in the spaces they inhabit. We all come from different walks of life, and everyone’s journey is different, but that does not mean we cannot grow together and accomplish great things as librarians and pave the way for a more inclusive and harmonious environment for our successors in this field.

    • Rayheem suggested that Shamika and Beth can work with IGs on this as well.
    • Beth went over the guidelines and asked for feedback.
    • Beth shared that we should post this on our website, per ALA’s recommendation.
    • Rayheem suggested adding linktree.
    • Edeama suggested a training.
    • Kelli suggested having the IGs also provide feedback.
    • Everyone agreed that the policy should be posted on the website.
    • Edeama and Beth will bring this to next IG meeting, Rayheem will coordinate the time of this meeting.
    • ACTION: Everyone make suggestions to the draft social media policy by next Board meeting, Sept. 22, 2023

  • CARL Slack account (Beth)
    • Adding Board members to test it out (please share preferred email address)
    • Opening up to all CARL members to opt into once we’re ready
      • Question: I set up a generic gmail account to create various accounts and wanted feedback on how it appears in Slack that the email invite comes from “carlsocialmedia1@gmail.com” - does it make more sense to use one of our work email accounts as the Slack Workplace owner so the invites seem less generic?
      • Wild Apricot might have an option for us
    • Beth created the Instagram account and per Shamika’s suggestion will create a Slack account.
    • Slack will be an opt-in option for CARL members. Beth suggested we can start as a group first.

    • Rayheem gave background on why Shamika wanted to use slack.
    • Kelli shared that we can possibly use Wild Apricot (WA) emails for the slack too. Kelli also wants to look into the communication tools that come with WA, in order to make it very streamlined.
    • Annette offered to help with Slack set-up, if needed
    • Beth will add the following people in Slack: Annette, Melissa, Rayheem, and Edeama
  • Member reports
    • Beth got a free Canva account, since we are a non-profit. All of us can be added, if we’d like.
    • David provided a WA update. Next step is to move the web content, and some design improvements.
    • IGs currently do not have access to update their own content, but David is going to work on this summer, so they can. In the meantime, they can send content to David for updates.
    • David shared more about email hosting, David can set that up for us. Rayheem suggested giving that feedback to Shamika, if we want to create emails like, [role]@carl-acrl.org
    • Edeama will have IG meeting minutes
    • Kelli shared there is a June 15th newsletter deadline, send Kelli updates.
    • ACTION: Shamika and Rayheem will create a digital card for Liz G. and the rest of us can sign it.

Appendix A - Board Member Reports

Elected Members
  • President
    • I would like to thank everyone for being a part of the board. I am honored to get to work with you all. I appreciate each and every one of you. Summer is upon us. I hope you all have some fun and restful plans. Please take lots of summer pictures to share (optional) at our next meeting.
    • Updates:
      • ACRL delegate information - ACRL Chapter Council Delegate contacts were Lucy Bellamy and Kelly Janousek. I thought these positions were outside of board support. My thoughts were incorrect. According to Kelly, the ACRL delegates should be the current President and the ACRL DaL. We need to remove Lucy and Kelly’s names from documentation. There isn’t any additional support which I believe is a disservice as the majority of us on the CARL board are new.
      • DaL Assignments: Melissa - ACRL delegate / Laura Wimberly - Awards Committee Liaison / Beth - Communications Officer/ Edeama- IG Coordinator. Temporarily, Rayheem will serve as the Awards Committee Liaison until Laura is able to resume her role.
      • Liz G has stepped down from her E&I role. She enjoyed the work and being part of the team, but her library workload needs to take priority. I wish her well. Is it appropriate to email her a thank you digital card? Thoughts? I have drafted a call for a new E&I coordinator. I plan to email it out on Monday. I will also ask Kelli to include this call in the newsletter.
      • Reminder: Please share IG events, open meetings, etc with Annette so she may add them to the CARL calendar. I encourage everyone to support our IGs whenever possible.
      • Conference Committee: We have 3 volunteers so far. I am hoping to get at least two to four more. Kelli, please continue to run the call for conference volunteers.
        • Michelle Mussuto
        • Lynne Karle
        • Daniel Wilson
      • Thank you to the Wild Apricot migration team. Your dedication and diligence is greatly appreciated.
  • Treasurer
    • Wild Apricot is good, but having difficulty canceling YM subscription. I will not be continuing as Treasurer beyond 2023, so the sooner a replacement can be found, the better.
  • Director-at-Large, Community Colleges
    • The interest group leads had the IG leadership meeting on March 15th, 2023 from 12 pm to 1:30 PM with IG Group Reports and Updates, CARL Updates by CARL President- Shamika Simpson and  CARL Budget/Finance Updates-Jennifer Silverman
  • Director-at-Large, Private Colleges and Universities/Communications Officer

    • Also set up a free non-profit Canva account (since we’re a non-profit we got a pro-account for free) to be used for social media content creators
    • Planning to call for 2-3 social media content creator volunteers soon (Shamika and I have drafted a call)
  • No Report: Vice President; Past President; Secretary; Membership Director, ACRL Chapters Council Delegate; Director-at-Large, UC; Director-at-Large, CSU
Appointed Members
  • Web Coordinator
    • Migration of the membership database to Wild Apricot required some DNS configuration and changes “under the hood” to the current web site. Next steps will be to migrate web site content to Wild Apricot, which will involve:
      • Adjusting design on Wild Apricot.
      • Organizing structure for the content to be migrated.
      • Arranging access for IGs to maintain their content on the new platform.
  • Mentorship Committee Chair
    • There are no updates at this time. The program is running smoothly.
  • No Report: Newsletter editor
