#Carpentries25 Anniversary Celebration Series

Thanks to everyone who attended the launch event to celebrate The Carpentries 25th anniversary! The festivities will be ongoing until the end of the year, so be sure to register to receive communications about upcoming events. The next events in our series will be spotlighting the origins and activities of our subcommunities in New Zealand, Australia, and Africa. Save the dates!

Member Council Quarterly Meeting

The next Member Council meeting is scheduled for 22-23 August. If you are a representative from a member organisation, be sure to mark your calendars to attend.


Monthly Welcome Sessions

We have scaled up the number of Welcome Sessions offered to our community. These sessions are ideal for recently trained Instructors (attending counts towards checkout), new Member contacts, and anyone curious to learn more about The Carpentries community. This is also a great place to re-onboard if you haven’t been engaged with us for a while! Check out upcoming dates and times and sign up to attend on the Etherpad. If you are interested in serving as a Welcome Session host, please email community@carpentries.org.

Join our Director of Community for office hours next month! You can drop in at any point during the hour to ask a question or bring up any topic for discussion.


Executive Council

Code of Conduct Transparency Report: As per The Carpentries' bylaws, the Executive Council, in collaboration with the Code of Conduct Committee, releases a transparency report quarterly to inform the community of potential breaches, policy and committee changes. The most recent report is available for review.


Workshop Administration Team

Carpentries Instructors, be sure to sign up on the etherpad for the next Instructor Meeting, Tuesday, 8 August at 15:00 UTC and 21:00 UTC.

Instructor Training Team

Updates to the Instructor checkout process are now scheduled for mid-August. These updates are based on feedback we received in 2022 during our project to evaluate the certification process. Stay tuned to Carpentries communications channels for information!

      • This is a monthly call for community members in the DACH region of Europe (i.e., Germany, Austria, Switzerland).

    • Part 2 (collaboration session): Communication with and convening your Carpentries subcommunity at 20:30 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • A Carpentries subcommunity brings together a subset of the global community and can be local, regional, domain-specific, or a group of community members sharing a common language or interests. During this session, participants will collaborate on developing a tip sheet to support communicating with and convening a Carpentries subcommunity. It will build upon an earlier interactive session reviewing existing tools and documentation (Part 1). Anyone interested in community building is welcome to join one or both sessions!

      • This lesson will teach how to use the GitHub interface to contribute to Carpentries curricula. It does not require any experience with git/GitHub but you will need to create a GitHub account in advance.

      • Discussion designed for Instructors getting ready to teach or having recently taught to come discuss their workshop with the community and new instructors going through the check-out process.

    • Skill Up: Tips and Resources for Writing Successful and Impactful Grant Proposals at 19:00 UTC (find your time; add to calendar)

      • In this session, I will share tips and resources for writing successful and impactful grant proposals based on my experiences as a grant writer and reviewer and will invite other attendees to share as well. This session will also include information on all you need to know to build The Carpentries into your grant proposals, from requesting a letter of support to budgeting funds for specific activities. Content from this (and a repeat session) will be shared back with the broader community through a blog post, which attendees will be invited to co-author.

Community Opportunity Postings

  • Are you an expert in responsible data with a flair for training other people to be as talented as you? If so, please get in touch with ronda@data.org to learn more about a potential opportunity to support with training content development beginning in August 2023.


  • University of California, Davis is recruiting multiple postdoctoral scholars in translational data science to participate in DataLab’s 2-year TRANSCEND Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The positions are open until filled, but initial review of applications received before 23 July 2023 has begun.


  • Quantum Leap Africa (QLA), an independent research center of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), invites applications from African researchers and researchers of African descent for two Postdoctoral Fellowships in Data Science commencing on October 1, 2023. The positions are research-oriented without any teaching responsibilities, however, giving seminars is expected as is mentoring young scientists. Closes 31 July 2023.


  • 2i2c is looking for a Technical Content Specialist that will create and curate documentation that supports interactive computing and cloud based Open Science. This is part of a large collaborative project that also includes The Carpentries. The position is open until filled, however the reviewing of applications will begin on August 2, 2023.


  • The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow (Bioinformatics) to work in the Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics Unit in Nairobi to support genomic data analysis, build computational standardized and reproducible workflows, and lead bioinformatics capacity-building initiatives. Closes 4 August 2023.


  • The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Research Software Engineer to join a team collaborating across the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the RSE communities on a variety projects around data science, AI and cutting edge digital infrastructure for environmental science. The job is based in Cambridge although remote working options are available. Closes 6 August 2023.


  • The University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA, is seeking a Research Computing Facilitator to provide facilitation, documentation, training, and service request support for Research Computing clients related to scaling computational research workflows on high-performance computing (HPC) resources. The position is hybrid eligible. Presumably open until filled.


  • The US Research Software Engineer Association’s (US-RSE) is looking for a Community Manager to support its members in building their rapidly growing community of research software engineers and in achieving the other components of US-RSE’s mission. This is a full-time, remote position for an initial two-year term. Presumably open until filled.


  • The University of Pennsylvania is looking for a full-time Community Engagement Lead to advance Research Rigor and Open Science. Hybrid/remote options are possible, though some in-office time is strongly preferred (Philadelphia, PA). Presumably open until filled.


  • The Research Engagement department of the University of Arizona Libraries is hiring a Data Repository Specialist. This posting will remain open until filled.


  • Illinois Institute of Technology is still looking to hire a Research Software Engineer. Open until filled.


  • The University of Oslo is offering a temporary position as a Bioinformatician (Head engineer/Senior engineer) at the Center for Lifespan Changes in Brain and Cognition (LCBC), in the Department of Psychology.


  • The Story Collider is currently seeking to hire a full-time Storytelling Education and Research Director and a freelance producer in the New York City area or on the East Coast and in Seattle. The two positions remain open until filled.


  • NC State is still wishing to hire a Manager HPC Computation Support. Open until filled.
