Here we go, August! With the development of the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center and the Corporate offices in Charleroi, there is an MVAA-sponsored event every day of the week. MVAA/Brownsville Community Day will be on Saturday, August 5, and will be a day full of activities such as food vendors, five bands/acts, and many more community events. And it's all FREE to the public with the gracious support of The Somerset Trust and Brownsville Borough. Activities start at 11 a.m. at Snowden Square and conclude with the dynamic Aristotle Jones Band on the main stage. Come early, come hungry, and bring a chair. It will be a day you don’t want to miss.

Student of the Month: Grayson Dennis

Grayson Dennis, a drummer from Finleyville, attends Ringgold Elementary and is in fourth grade. While excelling in his school activities, he has also diligently taken private drum lessons at Mark’s Drum Shop in Charleroi for the past two years. While progressing through the Harr Method of drumming, he aims to reach the school band and play drums in a rock band. Stay tuned for this young superstar. Go, Grayson!

"You, Me, & Harry": A Celebration of Harry Chapin
|
|
Mon Valley Academy for the Arts is proud to announce an intimate and emotionally charged performance by Mon Valley native Lou Antonucci, titled "You, Me, & Harry," celebrating the timeless story-songs of legendary singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. The solo performance will take place at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in Brownsville on Wednesday, September 13, at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a memorable evening of music and storytelling.
Harry Chapin, known for his poignant and socially conscious songs, left a lasting impact on music and philanthropy. Some of his most famous songs, such as "Cat's in the Cradle," "Taxi," and "W.O.L.D," continue to resonate with audiences across generations. With his captivating delivery, Lou Antonucci pays homage to Chapin's unique storytelling style, forging an intimate bond with the audience reminiscent of a Harry Chapin performance.
"We are thrilled to host Lou Antonucci's moving tribute to the incredible legacy of Harry Chapin," says Annette Buffer, President of Mon Valley Academy for the Arts. "Lou's performance brings back the essence of Chapin's storytelling, captivating the audience with every song. It's an event not to be missed."
Tickets for this performance are priced at $15, and seating is limited. To guarantee a seat, pre-registration is available by calling 724-561-5616. Attendees may bring a beverage of their choice; however, cups and ice will not be available. Light refreshments will be provided. In the spirit of Harry Chapin's dedication to ending hunger, Mon Valley Academy for the Arts will collect donations for St. Peter's Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Brownsville Food Bank at the door on the day of the show. The organization believes that access to nutritious food is a fundamental human right and aims to make a difference in the local community. Attendees are invited to contribute non-perishable food items to support this meaningful cause.

Comic Artist Shane Ronzio to Host Web Comic Class
|

Comic artist Shane Ronzio will conduct an exclusive web comic class on August 18, 2023, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center, located at 119 Brownsville Ave., in Brownsville.
The web comic class presents a unique opportunity for comic enthusiasts and aspiring artists to learn from the remarkable talents of Shane Ronzio, renowned for his captivating storytelling and distinctive art style. Participants will delve into the fascinating world of web comics, gaining valuable insights into creating compelling narratives and dynamic illustrations.
The class is designed for ages 13 and above; however, MVAA welcomes individuals of all ages who share an interest in the art of web-based comics. The registration fee is set at an affordable $10 per person, making it an accessible opportunity for anyone passionate about exploring the creative potential of web comic art, and all materials will be provided.

Throughout his impressive career, Shane Ronzio crafted the webcomic "Cross Worlds Nexus," which has captivated readers since 2007. His stories follow Technologically Advanced Future Warriors engaged in epic battles against evil across time and space. Shane's work includes over fifty comic books, and graphic novels published online and in print across various platforms, with many becoming enduring fan favorites.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Shane Ronzio's extensive travels have granted him a unique perspective that profoundly influences his works. From exploring the lost ruins in the jungles of Central America to studying in the City of Lights, Paris, France, his experiences have imbued his storytelling with richness and depth.

Knitting and Crochet Classes at MVAA South

A series of crochet and knitting classes are scheduled for July and August 2023. Hosted at the prestigious Peter J. Daley Cultural Center (MVAA South) in Brownsville, these engaging classes will provide participants with an opportunity to learn and explore the art of crochet and knitting while connecting with old and new friends.
The schedule for the upcoming classes is as follows:
- Beginning Knitting: August 14, 2023, from 6-9 p.m.
- Tunisian Knitting: August 15, 2023, from 6-9 p.m.
- Granny Squares: August 19, 2023, from 6-9 p.m.
Led by the talented Chelle Hritz Adams, a native of Brownsville renowned for her expertise in crochet and knitting, these classes promise a delightful learning experience for participants of all skill levels. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to enhance your existing skills, these classes will provide a nurturing environment for growth and creativity.

Brownsville Community Day

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is excited to announce its participation in Brownsville Community Day, a vibrant celebration of community spirit and artistic talent, taking place on August 5, 2023, at Snowden Square in Brownsville. This eagerly anticipated event, sponsored by Somerset Trust Company, promises to be a memorable experience for attendees of all ages.
Kicking off the festivities at 3 p.m., MVAA's Regimental Fife & Drum Unit will set the patriotic tone with a soul-stirring performance of the National Anthem. Following this moving tribute, esteemed Brownsville mayor, Ross Swords, will address the crowd, sharing inspiring words of unity and community pride.
The event will feature a lineup of remarkable performances by MVAA-affiliated groups that are sure to captivate the audience. At 3:30 p.m., the dynamic VoiceZ on Fire show choir will grace the stage with their captivating harmonies and energetic choreography. The Twin Coaches Jr. Stage Band will take over at 4:30 p.m., showcasing their exceptional musical talent and infectious rhythms. The Ringgold String Band will continue the melodic journey at 5:30 p.m., enchanting the crowd with their skillful instrumental arrangements. The evening will culminate at 6 p.m. with a powerful performance by the Sam Bill Legacy Band, leaving the audience awe-struck by their soulful melodies and engaging stage presence. In addition, the Verticals Theater Group will showcase their theatrical prowess at 4 p.m., adding an exciting and immersive dimension to the event.
An unforgettable highlight of the evening will be the captivating performance by West Virginia musician, Aristotle Jones, also known as the "Appalachian Soul Man." His unique blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics will take the stage at 7:30 p.m., leaving the audience yearning for more.
All performances will take place at the magnificent Cast Iron Amphitheater, providing a picturesque setting for an unforgettable evening of artistic expression. Alongside the remarkable performances, attendees can enjoy a variety of food vendors, browse through enticing booths featuring local artisans, and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere that Brownsville Community Day has to offer.

Fall Craft & Sip to be held at MVAA South
|

The Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is thrilled to announce the Fall Craft & Sip BYOB event hosted by renowned crafting expert Tammy Boyle. This exciting evening of creativity, camaraderie, and relaxation will occur on August 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center at 119 Brownsville Ave. in Brownsville.
Participants can choose between two captivating crafts: a 4-foot tall “Porch Leaner” scarecrow or pumpkin, skillfully constructed from rustic cedar planks. With all materials provided, attendees can focus on unleashing their artistic talents without hassle. Tammy Boyle, a seasoned crafting veteran with 35 years of experience, ensures that step-by-step instructions will be provided to minimize anxiety and guide participants through the creative process.
“The Fall Craft & Sip event is all about creating lasting memories and cultivating a sense of accomplishment,” said Boyle, former owner of The Olde Red Door in Uniontown. “I just enjoy the great camaraderie and seeing the happy expression on people’s faces after they complete their pieces. It’s a great night of friendship and fellowship.”
In addition to the craft activities, attendees can indulge in delectable snacks available for purchase. Whether participants are sipping their favorite beverage or nibbling on scrumptious treats, the Fall Craft & Sip event promises to be a delightful and relaxing evening.
The Mon Valley Academy for the Arts president, Annette Buffer, encourages everyone to attend this one-of-a-kind event. “We invite all art enthusiasts, craft lovers, and individuals seeking a memorable evening to join us at the Fall Craft & Sip event. It’s an opportunity to unleash your creativity, socialize with like-minded individuals, and support the arts in our community,” Buffer stated.
Pre-registration and pre-payment for the Fall Craft & Sip event are required to secure a spot. Interested individuals can register online. The deadline to register is Wednesday, August 16, by midnight.

Sam Bill Legacy Band & Mon Valley Marching Unit

Rehearsals for the recently formed Sam Bill Legacy Band and Mon Valley Marching Unit are underway. This new community band welcomes musicians of all ages and skill levels and rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center.
Mr. Ken Coffman is the principal director of the new band.

VoiceZ on Fire Show Choir

In 2022, Mon Valley Academy for the Arts expanded its musical opportunities for students and young adults in the Tri-County area by launching the area’s newest show choir, VoiceZ on Fire. The new group performs current charts and standard tunes at events throughout the Valley.
The show choir is open to students in junior and senior high and individuals and young adults who are looking for new gigs to showcase their talents for singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. The group rehearses Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center.
The academy’s show choir provides a creative outlet for youth in the Valley interested in expanding voice skills and learning the fine art of performing with a synchronized group.
The MVAA will provide music and audio files as educational guides for mastering the song list.

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) is thrilled to announce the remarkable achievements of its student musicians from the MVAA Regimental Fife & Drum unit at the prestigious Gettysburg Battlefield Bash. These exceptional young musicians showcased their talent and dedication for the second consecutive year, leaving an indelible mark on history. The event took place on July 14 and 15, 2023, with awe-inspiring performances that exemplified the essence of art and community spirit.
"To say we, the MVAA, are proud of these fine young musicians is a major understatement," said Mark Smith, CEO of Mon Valley Academy for the Arts. "Their unwavering commitment to excellence and preserving our rich cultural heritage is commendable. Through their mesmerizing performances, they have kept the arts alive and united the community in a celebration of our shared history."
The MVAA Regimental Fife & Drum unit had the honor of spearheading the opening ceremony for the renowned Gettysburg Battlefield Bash. Their stirring melodies echoed across the hallowed grounds, paying homage to the sacrifices of the past while captivating the hearts of all present. The students' passion for music and history was evident in their every note, transporting the audience back in time and igniting a deep appreciation for the nation's heritage.
In addition to the opening ceremony, the talented musicians graced the State of Pennsylvania Monument with their musical prowess. Standing proudly before this significant monument, they delivered a moving performance that resonated with the location's historical significance, leaving a lasting impression on spectators and dignitaries alike.
President of the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts, Annette Buffer, expressed her admiration for the students' dedication to their craft and positive impact on the community. "These gifted young artists continue to inspire us all with their boundless talent and dedication to their craft," she said.
The MVAA Regimental Fife & Drum unit's success at the Gettysburg Battlefield Bash reaffirms Mon Valley Academy for the Arts commitment to fostering artistic excellence and nurturing young talents to become ambassadors of culture and history.
In the coming month, the MVAA Regimental Fife & Drum unit will perform as part of Brownsville Community Day, which will take place in Snowden Square on August 5 and August 12 at Cook’s Farm in Belle Vernon.
The Reg’t Fife and Drum unit rehearses Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center. They are actively recruiting new members.

The MVAA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization that offers an eclectic array of programming and events, including musical instruction, art exhibits, a free summer concert series, and the opportunity for youth in grades 7-12 to perform with the Twin Coaches Junior Stage Band. The mission of the MVAA is to provide arts and cultural programs and activities to the Mon Valley and beyond that informs, entertains and engages this community and the region in lifelong learning and cultural experiences for all ages. The MVAA is operated by an all volunteer board of directors, with each member bringing their unique talents and experiences to help the organization to grow and thrive. The MVAA is funded by individual donations, grants, and corporate sponsors, and maintains a virtual storefront where they sell musical equipment that has been donated to the organization.
