September 2023

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15th; explore Latina/o/e/x academic, cultural, and community groups to become involved with on campus.

Welcome/back to the fall semester! The Women's Center extends a warm welcome to members of our community and especially to our new graduate student staff members, Anika Johnson and James Schwartz!

We're excited to connect with everyone at some upcoming events: the Appleby Hall & Bruininks Hall Open House on September 12th; and at the Learning Abroad Fair on September 20th (where we'll be sharing info about our upcoming Maymester 2024 global seminar, Feminist Leadership in Argentina). We also encourage students, recent grads and alumni, as well as staff and professionals, to attend an event from one of our Gender Equity Grant recipients — 50 SWEet Years at the UMN, hosted by the Society of Women Engineers (Sept. 28th).

We're wishing everyone a meaningful semester full of care, support and solidarity!

As always, you can always catch up with us on Instagram and Twitter / X (@mnwomenscenter) in between newsletter editions.

Virtual Group for Students
white Women's* Accountability & Action Group

Join Student Counseling Services and the Women's Center for a virtual community of learning, accountability and action for STUDENTS! We’ll discuss:
  • how we are impacted by our socialization at the intersections of racial privilege & gender-based oppression
  • how we perpetuate the harm of white supremacy (despite our good intentions)
  • how we can work towards racial & gender justice in our selves, our relationships, our institutions & our world
* We warmly welcome any undergrad, graduate, and professional students who have been socialized into “whiteness” and “womanhood” at any point in their lives. We welcome those who identify as white, as well as indigenous and people of color who may be read as white and/or experience white passing privilege. We welcome cis women, trans women, and AFAB trans/non-binary folks. We trust and respect how you self-identify, and we want you in this group if you believe your experiences are aligned with our intentions. If you have questions or concerns about the language and framing we’ve provided here, please contact us to share your feedback.

The group will be co-facilitated by:
  • Meredith Martyr, PhD, LP, HSP (she/her) - Student Counseling Services &
  • Anna Lifson, MSW, LICSW (she/they) - Women's Center
Group will be held virtually on Wednesdays from 1:30pm - 2:45pm from October 11th to December 6th, 2023 (no meeting the day before Thanksgiving).
